My client is a point-of-sale retail finance provider. With an aim to help small and medium size businesses to increase sales of their goods and services by offering lending products that enable retail consumers to spread the cost of their purchases.

The Compliance Manager (CM) works closely with the Head of Compliance (HoC) with compliance activity within the Company supporting core compliance initiatives and the company’s control framework by building relationships with key stakeholders, promoting an ethical working environment and successfully driving through regulatory change; and in the absence of the HoC ensure the smooth running of the Compliance Team.

As the Compliance Manager your responsibilities and duties will include:

Performance:
  • Assist the HoC in delivering an adequate control framework against key risks (AML, fraud, conduct, consumer duty risks etc.)
  • Ensure issues are promptly identified through monitoring of the business and its suppliers in line with the compliance monitoring plan.
  • Complaints and allegations of fraud are promptly and effectively investigated and resolved.
  • Rule breaches are reported, escalated as appropriate and measures put in place to stop recurrence.
  • Compliance policies and procedures reflect the latest regulatory requirements.
  • Co-ordinates and files all regulatory returns on time / ensures all licences & registers are up to date.
  • Stay close to new developments emerging from regulators to support the HoC in horizon planning and keeping colleagues across the business up to date on any changes that might affect their area.
Communications:
  • Point of contact for risk and compliance within the company.
  • Communicates clearly and articulately in all forms of written communication including email.
  • Reaches out to peers and co-operates to establish a collaborative working relationship.
  • Does what is right, not just what is politically expedient. Speaks plainly and truthfully.
Teamwork:
  • Work with all areas of the business to ensure that activities are within agreed regulatory parameters / the company’s risk appetite.
  • Assist with the maintenance of comprehensive records of compliance policies and procedures together with evidence of compliance with same.
  • Assist with the maintenance of accurate compliance records (e.g. complaints; disputes; breaches; subject access requests; AML / PEP / sanctions screening; fraud investigations; gifts and hospitality; financial promotions; training; authorised individuals)
Information Technology:
  • Maintain comprehensive records of compliance policies and procedures together with evidence of compliance with same.
  • Maintain and / or oversee accurate compliance records (e.g. complaints; disputes; breaches; subject access requests; AML / PEP screening; fraud allegations; gifts and hospitality; financial promotions; authorised individuals)
  • Ensure regulatory reporting systems are accurate and up to date (GABRIEL; Connect; Chrysalis etc.)
  • Monitor and provide feedback on improvements to systems and processes to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Essential Skills and Competencies of the Compliance Manager

  • A compliance all-rounder in a senior compliance role or someone looking to step up to a senior compliance role.
  • Experience and success in a regulated financial services compliance role is required. Experience in Consumer / SME Lending compliance is highly desirable.
  • A solid understanding of the UK regulatory environment is essential. Familiarity with the Consumer Credit sector would be advantageous.
  • Hands on experience of compliance with FCA financial promotions rules required, experience of reviewing / approving consumer credit financial promotion is highly desirable.
  • Experience of investigating complaints and allegations of fraud.
  • Compliance monitoring experience.
  • A robust personality combined with the ability to cope with a varied day required. Ability to understand others’ viewpoints and to challenge ideas / processes.
  • Strong analytical skills - able to structure and process qualitative or quantitative data and draw insightful conclusions from it. Exhibits a probing mind / curious nature.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
