Are you passionate about empowering individuals through education? Do you have experience or expertise in British Sign Language (BSL) and Deaf Studies? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to make a difference in our vibrant educational community.

Percy Shurmer Academy is a large two-form entry primary academy. We currently have 442 pupils aged from 3 to 11 which also includes 39 children in our Nursery and a Deaf Learning Base (DLB). We currently have 16 pupils in our DLB which will be increasing to 20 in 2024/2025.

The school is divided into Nursery and Reception (EYFS), Years 1 - 2 (KS1) and Years 3-6 (KS2). We have been rated by Ofsted as Outstanding (May 2023).

As a BSL and Deaf Studies Teacher, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality education to our students. You will design and deliver engaging lessons that cater to the unique learning needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Your expertise in BSL and Deaf Studies will enable you to create an inclusive classroom environment where all students feel valued and supported.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver dynamic lessons in BSL and Deaf Studies, incorporating innovative teaching methods and resources.
  • Teaching BSL as our MFL to mainstream classes.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to accommodate the diverse learning styles and abilities of students.
  • Collaborate with the Sign Bilingual Consortium, Birmingham City Council and other organisations.
  • Provide differentiated instruction and support to meet the individual needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom culture that promotes respect, collaboration, and mutual support.
  • Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback to facilitate their academic and personal growth.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, parents, and support staff to ensure the holistic development of students.
  • Teach accredited course for parents and staff.

Requirements:

  • Teaching qualification.
  • Proficiency in British Sign Language (BSL), ideally holding a BSL qualification.
  • Experience or expertise in teaching Deaf Studies or related subjects.
  • Understanding of deaf culture, communication modes, and assistive technologies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and building positive relationships with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Commitment to promoting inclusivity, diversity, and equality in education.
