Rochester Bridge Trust are offering a 12-month undergraduate work placement as an Assistant Bridge Engineer, supporting the Bridge Team in the management of Rochester Bridge.

Who we are:

The Rochester Bridge Trust owns and maintains the two road bridges and the service bridge at Rochester, Kent.  The Trust is an ancient charity founded in 1399 to provide free crossings of the River Medway in Kent. The Trust is committed to supporting Engineering Education and has developed an award-winning education programme encouraging young people to learn more about civil engineering and bridge building.

Working with us:

You will work with the Bridge Team to develop and deliver the annual Bridge maintenance plan, taking responsibility for aspects of its delivery, including focusing on carbon reduction in accordance with the Trust's Net Zero Strategy. You will be a capable and effective communicator.

You will:

  • Work with colleagues to develop and deliver a prioritised programme of maintenance projects.
  • Manage the delivery of projects to the required quality, cost and programme with a focus on carbon reduction.
  • Work with colleagues to prepare, place and manage contracts for Bridge works and services.
  • Support the Trust's work within engineering education and represent the Trust at external events.

Qualifications and experience:

  • In order to be shortlisted you must be currently studying and have completed your 2nd year of an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering by the start date of September 2024.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential.
  • Good organisational and IT (MS Office) skills are required.
  • Student membership of a relevant professional engineering body is desirable.

Additional details

Contract type: Fixed term contract (Undergraduate Work Placement) up to 1 year

Hours: Full time 36 hours per week, working days Monday to Thursday (office closed on Fridays)

Salary: £23,000 per year

Location: Rochester, Kent, UK (will consider requests to work one day a week from home once settled in)

Annual leave: 23 standard days leave in each holiday year plus all public/bank holidays.

Pension: Defined benefit pension scheme
