Reporting to the Airfield Engineering Supervisor the role requires communication with all the stakeholders operating at the airfield both landside and airside in a safe, cost effective and efficient manner to maintain airfield operations and therefore promote positive customer experiences of using the airport.

The main function of the Airfield technician is to maintain the Aeronautical Lighting Systems, communication systems and operating areas of the aircraft (runway and taxiways), as well as be able to interpret engineering drawings and documents and their intent. The Airfield Technician is also required to carry out planned maintenance inspections, routine replacement of parts and system/component tests. Completion of logs, reports and requisitions is also a required role of the Airfield Technician to maintain the traceability of work completed and ensure smooth operation of the engineering department. All work is to be carried out in accordance with safety guidelines provided by the airport and the CAA.

The Airfield Technician role also requires supporting, escorting and safety supervision as required for external contractors working on the airfield, support and maintain systems used for material resource delivery, storage and stock use. While the role is predominately an electrical engineering role, there is a requirement to work on mechanical systems and to maintain paved areas of the airfield.

The Airfield Technician is required to work shifts over an 8 week shift pattern to provide full support to the airfield, and the annual work hour requirement is 2033hrs. However relevant training relating to airfield maintenance and operations is given with a strong supportive approach to training and development as part of the culture for continued personal development.

Candidate Suitability

The Airfield Technician will have Level 3 qualification in Electrical Installation and also have 18th Edition Wiring Regulation Qualifications. The Airfield Technician will ideally possess a level of experience working within a commercial electrical installation environment and have some experience of high voltage electrical systems and plant.

The Airfield Technician will have a strong eye for detail, be precise and accurate and will be an excellent communicator with a flexible, approachable attitude and resilience from experience in working in a challenging environment.

Under the overall direction of the Head of Airfield Infrastructure to participate in the provision of a safe, cost effective and efficient Airfield Engineering service. This role reports directly to the Airfield Engineering Supervisor. There is a requirement to interface with Air Traffic Control, Airlines, Handling Agents, Security, Tenants and concessionaires operating in airside and landside external locations and the Airport’s Contract organisations.


Main Duties and Responibilities

  • Managing the Facility
  • Maximising the use of existing facilities whilst not compromising customer service
  • To carry out maintenance, alteration, adaptation or installation work to the Aero Nautical Lighting systems and associated control equipment on the airfield.
  • To maintain the Operational manoeuvring areas Runways & Taxiways for the safe operation of aircraft including minor civil repair work.
  • To use Engineering Drawings and Documents in Maintenance Activities.
  • To carry out conditional monitoring on mechanical plant and electronic/ electrical equipment.
  • To carry out planned maintenance, inspections, testing and repairs on electrical equipment and mechanical plant on the Airport site.
  • To participate with internal communications systems and to use new technology and systems as appropriate.
  • To complete appropriate documentation as required, i.e. inspection reports / log books, stores requisitions, cost coding, vehicle daily inspection reports, job reports.
  • To collect materials from stores / suppliers / assist with site deliveries and ensure running stocks of materials are maintained and available.
  • To provide escort and or RT cover for contractors working airside and in remote off site locations where required.
