Howden Joinery is hiring for a Transport SHE Advisor to provide expert guidance and support in all aspects of Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) management. The position will be based at our new purpose-built Raunds campus in Northamptonshire, with extensive travel to our depots and sites across the UK. You will need to be prepared to travel and will be provided with a company car.

We are looking for an experienced individual passionate about ensuring safety, health, and environmental compliance within the transport industry. Your role will involve ensuring adherence to internal systems and legislative requirements, particularly in the Transport/On-road risk environment. You'll also collaborate closely with the Transport management team, offering direction, assistance, and advice to maintain top-notch SHE standards.

What will you be doing as our Transport SHE Advisor:

  • Directly report to the Head of SHE, overseeing and monitoring SHE performance in Howdens' Transport function.
  • Supporting 5 Primary sites at Howden, Runcorn, Raunds, Normanton and Holme-Upon-Spalding-Moor
  • Advise on best practices in managing On Road Risk (ORR), load safety, driver human factors, and fostering a positive safety culture.
  • Standardise operating standards across Howdens, 3PL providers, and XDC sites.
  • Collaborate with the Howdens Trade H&S Team on depot assessments, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
  • Develop, review, and implement robust safety policies tailored for transport operations.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, investigate incidents, and recommend preventive actions.
  • Provide training on defensive driving, fatigue management, and hazard recognition.
  • Monitor driver wellness and promote environmental stewardship by optimising fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.
  • Foster a safety-first culture through collaboration and effective communication with stakeholders.
  • Act as a liaison between Howdens and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and training sessions on safety and environmental matters.
  • Requirements:

What do you need to qualify for the Transport SHE Advisor role:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a Transport-focused H&S role.
  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent (Grad IOSH minimum).
  • Diploma in Environmental Management (Assoc Member IEMA).
  • Good working knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.
  • Chartered Membership of IOSH (desirable).
  • 45001/14001 Auditor certification (desirable).
  • Full driving licence.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage workload effectively.
  • Proficiency in computer skills.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
  • Impartiality and confidentiality in investigations.
  • Initiative, teamwork, patience, and diligence.
  • Capability to maintain accurate records.
