Are you an ambitious light vehicle mechanic that is looking for the opportunity to upskill into an exciting industry? Well, look no further.

National Express, in partnership with Shorterm Group, is providing an exciting new opportunity for motivated car mechanics to upskill and become skilled PSV/Bus  Engineering Technicians.

This opportunity is currently available at Acocks Green, Birmingham Central, Walsall, West Bromwich or Yardley Wood.

You will be enrolled onto the IMI (Institute of Motor Industry) accredited light vehicle to heavy goods vehicle upskilling programme, where you will be employed by Shorterm Group for the programme duration. This will be 42 hours a week employment contract. You will spend approximately 6 hours a week receiving ‘one to one’ training with an experience mentor and the rest of the time you will work in a team of experience technicians.

You will be paid £14.43 per hour [£31,515 annual salary] during the upskilling year.
You will get 28 days paid holiday per annum [ includes bank holidays]

The program lasts 1 year. You will complete a series of mapped ‘on the job’ practical's as well as a series of online training modules [at home learning]. We will proactively support you through the programme. Following successful completion of the programme, you will have the opportunity to begin employment with National Express as a PSV/Bus Engineering Technician at which point you will receive a significant uplift on salary.

To be successful in the program, you'll have good time management, attendance, communication skills and be a confident car mechanic.

To be eligible for the program you will need …

  • Level 3 qualification in light vehicle repair and maintenance or equivalent
  • Level 2 English and Maths [Grade C or above at GCSE level or equivalent such as Functional Skills Level 2 or above]
  • 3 recent years experience recent as a hands on commercial mechanic  
  • Full UK car driving licence
  • Access to a laptop or PC at home [to complete an hour of self-study time per week outside of working hours]
  • A complete tool box with the tools of the trade [Specialist bus tools will be provided]
