Technical Support Officer
  • Location: Barnsley, S70
  • Job Type: Full-time, Hybrid (3 days in office, 2 days from home after training)
  • Salary: £12.59 per hour PAYE
  • Hours: Full time, 37 hours per week, Monday- Friday 

My client, a leading public sector organisation, are seeking a Technical Support Officer to provide essential support to their Health and Safety Advisors and the Occupational Health and Wellbeing Manager. This role also extends support to the Emergency Resilience service as needed. The ideal candidate will be organised, detail-oriented, and capable of handling a variety of tasks to support the smooth operation of health and safety initiatives within the organisation.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Arrange health and safety training courses, including room bookings, handling queries, arranging printing, and ordering course materials.
  • Mark test papers and assignments using a template and manage the recharging of costs to the relevant service or school.
  • Record accidents and incidents onto the correct databases and complete online forms to report certain accidents/incidents to the Health and Safety Executive.
  • Undertake analysis and provide data on the numbers and types of incidents.
  • Support managers in sourcing risk assessments for chemicals or other substances through the external supplier.
  • Handle requests for counselling, refer to external suppliers, keep records, and manage cost recharging.
  • Support the provision of the occupational health service, acting as a point of contact for queries and managing the use of the service portal.
  • Support the health surveillance programme by coordinating with the occupational health supplier and internal managers for employee referrals and appointment bookings.
  • Act as the first point of contact for service queries, monitor service-specific inboxes, and answer phone calls, providing responses or forwarding to the relevant colleague.
  • Attend meetings, take notes/minutes, distribute approved minutes, and follow up on action points.
  • Manage administrative tasks such as raising orders, approving invoices, and recharging costs to internal and external services.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills.
  • Experience of working with sensitive and highly confidential information including medical records
  • Experience of providing support services within a health and safety/occupational health service/department.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritise workload effectively.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in using databases and office software.
  • Experience in a similar technical support role is desirable.
  • Familiarity with health and safety practices and occupational health services is advantageous.
