FJA are working with a national leader in the Water industry, who are looking to recruit a Service Avoidance Expert. The role will be based in the Birmingham area and will require travel around the region.
 
You will report directly to the Health and Safety manager and your role will be working within the Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality (SHEQ) team, you will help support and embed service avoidance strategy for the region. 
 
You will have a working practical knowledge of all current service location and avoidance practices, including industry best practice. Supporting our operational teams, you will provide guidance and support to ensure our workforce are confident in their ability to locate, mark and avoid underground and above ground services. Give continuous support to ensure our workforce are implementing industry standard safe digging practices
.

Key responsibilities of a Service Avoidance Expert:
  • Assist site teams to establish local, specific, service avoidance plan which promotes our ‘Vac Ex as first principal’ approach.
  • Provide competency assessments for new employees and subcontractors in the use of service avoidance equipment (Cat & Genny)
  • Provide incident investigation support
  • Proactively champion innovation and best practice in Service Avoidance
  • Review Cat & Genny usage data and provide upskilling/coaching where identified
  • Coaching and mentoring of safe dig practices
  • To possess in-depth knowledge of methods used to pinpoint the exact location of water pipes and other underground utilities by using tools like electromagnetic locating equipment (EULS Cat 1) and adhering to industry standards like PAS128 for utility mapping.
Training and Support:
  • Developing training programs: Design and deliver training programs to equip personnel working on excavation projects with the skills and knowledge to safely locate and avoid water pipes.
  • Providing guidance and support: Offer ongoing support to operational teams, helping them develop site-specific service avoidance plans and ensuring adherence to best practices. This may involve coaching on using vacuum excavation (Vac Ex) as a preferred method to minimize the risk of damaging water lines.
  • Identify areas where workers need improvement and provide additional training or coaching on using service avoidance equipment or implementing safe digging procedures.
 
Requirements of a Service Avoidance Expert:
Essential
  • A passion for training others and create great practices to strive towards best practice
  • Self-Motivated to achieving the highest standards of service avoidance
  • Good knowledge of the PAS128 standard for utility mapping, in addition to having experience using Electro-magnetic locating equipment (EUSR Cat 1).
  • Safe dig practices (EUSR Cat2 or equivalent) from a previous operational background
  • Knowledge of good practice in construction, e.g. HSE guidance and approved codes of practice. (HSG47, GS6)
  • Knowledge of current statutory health and safety law in the UK
  • Knowledge of Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM)
  • The ability to travel around the region as required
Desirable
  • Formal qualification in Occupational Safety and Health (e.g. NEBOSH Construction Certificate) or proven industry practical-based experience
  • CSCS card or affiliated scheme (SHEA Water)
  • Good IT skills
