Senior Technical Accountant

VNA Recruitment is excited to present a fantastic opportunity for an experienced and qualified Senior Technical Accountant to join a dynamic local government team. Our client is a forward-thinking council committed to financial excellence and innovative practices.

Key Accountabilities:

• Leading the closure of the Council’s accounts and preparing the Statement of Accounts, ensuring compliance with regulations, codes of practice, and external audit requirements
• Managing the external audit process efficiently, minimising costs and promptly addressing audit queries
• Monitoring and analysing new legislation, regulations, and accounting standards, providing impact assessments and ensuring proper implementation
• Establishing and documenting consistent accounting policies, consulting with managers to ensure widespread application
• Implementing control procedures for accounting activities, including balance sheet reconciliations, grant registers, and the Council's asset register
• Leading treasury management activities, collaborating with Treasury Advisors and formulating the Council's treasury strategy
• Contributing to the management of the finance team, participating in policy development, and addressing operational and performance issues
• Planning, allocating, and managing resources within the team, ensuring cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and equality of opportunity
• Assisting the Lead Finance Specialist in discharging Section 151 responsibilities for effective financial administration

To succeed in this role, you should bring:

• Significant experience and knowledge of financial accounting practices/methodologies, particularly within a local government context
• Expertise in dealing with year-end budgets
• Excellent working knowledge of legislation and developments in local government finance
• Proven ability to provide sound advice and guidance on a range of cases, topics, or issues
• Hands-on experience with Finance systems, including Sage
• Qualified Accountant status
