As a primary school nurse, you'll play a pivotal role in promoting the health and welfare of students, ensuring they have access to the support they need to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally. With your nurturing demeanour and professional expertise, you'll be instrumental in creating a safe and nurturing environment where every child can thrive.


The Role

To ensure the good health and welfare of all pupils, staff and visitors of the school. Always ensure to conduct yourself in line with NMC guidelines as a registered nurse, also in line with NMC code of conduct. To ensure the relevant CPD is undertaken to and training is in line with your own Job Role requirements.


Key Responsibilities of the School Nurse

  • Daily organisation and administration of first aid in conjunction with the appropriate senior and teaching staff.
  • Responsible for all decisions relating to pupils being sent home during the hours of employment.
  • Liaise with parents when necessary to arrange for the collection of sick pupils.
  • To take pupils home/accompany them to hospital.
  • Administer pills, eye drops, ear drops, medicine and injections as directed by parents.
  • Responsibility of checking all medications, auditing, disposing and informing parent's of ensuring sufficient stock is available.
  • Liaise with the designated Local Authority school nurse and Heads of Year/Achievement Co-ordinators with regards to medical problems with pupils.
  • Monitor the health and welfare of pupils. Instigating appropriate action where required.
  • Administration of school medical records.
  • Responsible for informing relevant staff of the medical conditions of pupils.
  • Maintaining details of qualified First Aiders within the school.
  • Responsible for ensuring staff are updated with all medical training required for children onsite to ensure their medical needs are met best they can be ensuring their condition is debilitating their education.
  • Liaison with other agencies (Education Welfare Services, etc.)
  • Working alongside the SENCO to identify children's special education needs and doing relevant referrals.
  • Constant liaison with relevant teams e.g.) pastoral, office team, Senior leadership team and other school staff to ensure care plans are relevant to school, home life and any safeguarding issues. Accompanied Home visits /Hospital visits may be needed to be conducted to ensure wellbeing of children attending the school.
  • To ensure all tasks are carried out with due regard to Health and Safety
  • Any other duties as commensurate within the grade in order to ensure the smooth running of the school
Requirements:
  • Experience of working with children age 3- 11 and knowledge of the health needs of children
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills
  • An understanding of and experience in working with the aims and ethos of a school
  • Knowledge of health promotion, child protection, health education and screening programs.
  • Two years' professional experience as a qualified nurse and/or experience in health promotion and/or working with children in the community.
  • Knowledge of child protection.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the health needs of school children.
  • Experience, knowledge and understanding of carrying out immunisation and screening programmes.
  • Managing medical conditions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • A clear understanding of confidentiality issues.
  • Ability to work under pressure and stay calm in an emergency.
  • Ability to understand and follow policies and procedures and keep accurate records.
  • A qualified RGN with current NMC registration.
  • School Nursing/Specialist Community Public Health Nurse qualification

Core hours - 08:30-15.30 - Monday-Thursday - 08:30-13:30 - Friday
Some preparation and role-critical tasks will be required to be completed outside these hours
Salary - MPR4
