As a Ranger, you’re the heart and soul of the National Trust in the landscapes we protect. You’re a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors, and you’ll play a crucial role in keeping the nation’s beloved countryside and coast in good shape, for wildlife and for people. Working in some of the nation’s most stunning places and spaces, come rain or shine, your love of the outdoors will inspire others as you strive to ensure that landscapes are beautifully presented and continue to take our visitors’ breath away.

You should be willing to work some weekends, bank holidays and evenings, and be on call.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Salary: £23868 

Contract: Permanent

What it's like to work here

The iconic Hadrians Wall is a World Heritage site. As part of this team, you’ll work across a portfolio of sites which also includes Allen Banks, Staward Gorge, Cherryburn, Housesteads Fort and George Stephenson’s Birthplace. Roles within this portfolio are varied and the team is looking for committed people who’ll contribute to the locations’ ongoing growth and success. You’ll need your own transport to reach these locations, however the friendly team members often car share.

What you'll be doing

With your endless passion for our work, you’ll help with the protection and care of habitats, wildlife, property and machinery. Your passion will inspire others to love this beautiful place as much as you do. Working outdoors come rain or shine, in a variety of locations, your day-to-day work will change with the seasons and our priorities. From helping to maintaining our woodlands, manage access infrastructure, working with volunteers and engaging with the public no two days will be the same. You’ll make sure that, at every twist and turn of these fantastic landscapes, we’re delivering excellent conservation work. You’ll share our common goal with visitors and build relationships in the local community, proudly representing the National Trust.

Who we're looking for

We’d love to hear from you if you’re:

  • practically experienced in conservation work, to protect and improve habitats and landscapes
  • happy to talk to all kinds of people about the work you’re doing, and why it matters
  • hard-working and willing to learn
  • able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines
  • experienced in managing land, access and conservation, and working outdoors
  • able to use machinery and equipment, with relevant certificates
  • a driver with a full UK driving licence
