Location: Lingley Mere Headquarters, Warrington, UK. Possibility for some hybrid working as well as office-based working, to be agreed with line manager during on boarding process. The candidate will need to ensure that they can travel to Lingley Mere Headquarters in Warrington on a regular basis and when required.

Duration: 3 months

Salary: £23,152 per annum (pro-rota based on duration)

Working Hours: 37.00 per week

Role Overview

In the Commercial department the successful student will join a large team working on real business projects, carrying out a variety of quantity surveying tasks.

There is an opportunity to develop your commercial skills whilst gaining real world experience working alongside quantity surveyors in supporting the commercial function by delivering projects within the category plan ensuring optimum value for money for UU.

You will engage with operational and senior stakeholders; support the alignment of business strategy and policy to deliver category plans. You will ensure contractual compliance and proactively manage contractor performance throughout the contract period.

You will benefit from the shared knowledge within the Commercial team and expertise of working with colleagues across the wider capital delivery team including Engineers, Project Managers and PMO professionals, whilst also developing your own specialist skills and providing a valuable contribution to the team.

We will help you gain an understanding of the projects being undertaken to United Utilities and the methods used by deliver them. Specific tasks may be assigned during this time. You will be accountable for delivering these with the support of experienced quantity surveyors and your line manager.

During your 3-month intern summer placement you may also be given the opportunity to visit some of our sites. You’ll see how we carefully produce clean safe drinking water and how we treat wastewater in order to release it safely back into the environment.

You will also get the opportunity to mix with our current graduates who can share experiences, tips, and guidance with you for the next steps in your career.

What we are looking for

United Utilities are looking for undergraduate quantity surveyors studying a BSc Quantity Surveying who have completed as a minimum first year of a degree or equivalent.

To apply you need to:

  • Have researched and have knowledge of United Utilities construction activities.
  • Be working towards a BSc Quantity Surveying degree or a Construction related course.
  • Have varied technical knowledge, not only through academic experience, but also through social and professional experience.
  • Have a basic knowledge and awareness of key quantity surveying processes, tools, and methodologies used across the project life cycle.
  • Have good computer skills particularly in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel.
  • Be motivated and enthusiastic, and excellent team player, processing ambition and drive.
  • Process good written and interpersonal skills and have the ability to communicate and influence across all levels.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Be able to be comfortable working flexibly across a range of tasks and activities to deadlines as well as being able to prioritise your time.
  • Potentially to work unsupervised from home.
  • Able to get to Lingley Mere in Warrington.
