Job Description

Overview

This role will be responsible for the design of high-volume injection moulded sharps containers and their auxiliary accessories. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, from concept development and user research to final production and regulatory approval. The successful candidate will ideally possess a strong understanding of medical device design principles and regulatory compliance while applying their design expertise to create user-centered, manufacturable, and cost-effective products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop innovative solutions for the safe disposal of sharps and clinical waste, that meet current regulatory framework.
  • Create samples and working models for design testing, either by hand or using CAD prototyping equipment.
  • Physical testing of new product design ideas.
  • Focus on design for manufacturing including the development of efficient packaging options for NPD products, considering operator ease of packing, cost, and palletisation.
  • Maintain accurate testing reports and present ideas to colleagues and customers at various stages of the design process.
  • Set design and performance requirements based on briefs from internal teams and external partners.
  • Own and maintain documentation required to satisfy quality management systems for product development and change control processes.
  • Identify, review, and improve the design of existing products.
  • Review competitor products and market trends, to help identify unique selling points.
  • Ensure attention to detail, rectification of design error, and cost control when engaging in design work.
  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting schedule, cost, and quality controls.
  • Project manage assigned projects and provide leadership for multidisciplinary core team meetings to ensure project progression.
  • Assist the planning, tracking, and implementation of projects in alignment with the Phase Gate process.
  • Arrange meetings and liaise with engineers and other departments, including marketing, to discuss and negotiate appropriate production processes, costs, and commercial issues.
  • Work alongside the regulatory and quality teams to ensure product compliance in the relevant markets.
  • Design and maintain product labelling, meeting regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria:

  • Apprenticeship/HNC/HND in Product Design or equivalent working experience.
  • 3+ years previous experience in a product/industrial design or engineering role.
  • 3+ years previous experience working with injection moulding products.
  • Ability to multi-task on various projects at any one time and be able to work under pressure to deadlines.
  • Sound knowledge of CAD modelling software.
  • Sound understanding of layout design through use of Adobe suite (Illustrator and InDesign).
  • Demonstrable experience of product development work from concept to production.
  • Experience interacting across departments and with customers and suppliers.
  • Proficiency in working with full Microsoft Office package.
  • Reliable and trustworthy.
  • Consistent and flexible - able to deal with changing and competing demands.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.

Desirable Criteria:

  • BA/BSc degree in Product Design.
  • Experience of medical product design.
  • Experience in design for low-cost, high-volume manufacture.
  • Sound knowledge of Autodesk Inventor.
  • Good understanding of a range of material and manufacturing processes.

Salary

£27,000 per annum
