PARALEGAL/ CASE MANAGER - Criminal Law

SALARY DOE

To run own caseload on bespoke software for busy expanding practice dealing in criminal defence on a private and legal aid basis, driving matters and regulatory law.

Office based in Sidcup but this role can be undertaken on a hybrid basis once trained on our software.

Roles and responsibilities

  • To act in the capacity of a Case Manager in relation to criminal defence matters for our clients dealing with serious offences.
  • To carry out all day-to-day tasks on all cases assigned to you, and to assist in the day-to-day tasks on other cases not assigned to you as and when required.
  • This should include all matters in keeping with the duties of a professional Solicitor and include, (but are not limited to), the below.
    • Assuring clients cases are funded properly
    • Assuring that work meets the standards of Peer Review
    • Assuring that all files pass "the pickup test"
    • To assist in arranging the firms diary appropriately, both for clients and instructed advocates
    • Assuring that an appropriate level of client contact is maintained to minimise any risk of complaint
    • Carrying out tasks and having conduct of litigation on any given case, subject to the specific requirements of that case, including matters such as those in the non-exhaustive list that follows; drafting case specific client care letters and retainers, reviewing evidence, arranging meetings, taking clients instructions, drafting proofs of evidence, taking witness statements, drafting defence statements, drafting bad character applications and oppositions, drafting hearsay applications and oppositions, writing all letters required on any given case in keeping with house style, preparing matters for billing in timely fashion and in legible order with all time recording provided on the file accurately
    • To attend any appointment or meetings called by the practice internally and take any instructions from those meetings
    • To make use of legal resources provided to you by the firm such as (but not limited to) Crime line
    • To attend the office as and when required to do so by the practice to work.

Essential Skills

  • Strong IT Skills
  • Ability to use LEAP software, (training given) perform tasks, set key dates, keep a task list in order on a daily basis
  • Good knowledge of Criminal Law
