Mine Electrical Engineer

Are you an Electrical Engineer with leadership experience looking for an opportunity to bring your knowledge and skills to our mine based in Penrith, Cumbria? We are a dual method site, using both blasting and mechanised techniques in which to extract our raw materials, and this is an exciting opportunity to grow with British Gypsum and our wider business.

At British Gypsum we are looking for a Mine Electrical Engineer to manage the electrical engineering responsibilities at our mine in Kirkby Thore, Penrith, helping to deliver capex projects, ensure the integrity, safety, reliability and efficiency of our equipment, and to ensure the electrical systems within our mines are designed, installed and tested effectively.

As our Mine Electrical Engineer, you will manage a team of four electricians and an electrical apprentice. We're looking for someone who not only has the technical expertise but also amazing communication skills and inspirational leadership qualities.

British Gypsum is part of Saint-Gobain Interior Solutions (SGIS). Much of Britain has been built with British gypsum. Gypsum is the vital raw material at the heart of our plaster and plasterboard, and much of it is mined, milled and made in Britain. We have been mining gypsum for more than 150 years, a heritage we're very proud of.

This is a days-based role working Monday to Friday; however you will need to be flexible as sometimes situations arise where you'd need to be present outside of these hours.

What we're looking for:

  • A qualified Electrical Engineer with a Level III, HNC, HND or degree level qualification or equivalent
  • Technical and management experience either in mining or an environment where your skills can be transferable.
  • A strategic mindset with a focus on Continuous Improvement
  • An inspirational leader with fantastic team building qualities.
  • Financially astute, you'll be forecasting future requirements and be integral in preparing annual budgets
  • Knowledge of understanding programme logic relating to automation

What you will be doing:

  • Lead and motivate the Mine maintenance team to find new approaches and new technology to enable more cost-effective and reliable solution to existing known problems.
  • Work with mine engineers to assist development of the maintenance practices and the use of CMMS systems for project items.
  • Ensure the equipment and systems are installed and maintained to the correct standards, demonstrating compliance with current legislation
  • Identify system improvements and implement change, making plans to replace obsolete equipment
  • You'll be spending 70% of your time above ground but the remainder underground in our mine so must be confident with underground working
