Job title: Hospital Medical Director

Reporting and Accountable to: Hospital Director & Group Medical Directors

Job Location: Elizabeth House, Leicester, LE3 6QR

Job Purpose:

To work closely with the hospital director (registered manager) as part of the senior management team for the hospital to lead in delivering excellent operational and clinical performance, which will be achieved within agreed parameters including company business plans, regulatory standards, and sound clinical governance and to manage the Hospital’s medical team to deliver this.

Responsibilities:

The Medical Director shall lead, with the Hospital Director, the recruitment of doctors in accordance with the company’s policies.

  • To provide medical leadership to the multi-disciplinary senior management and clinical team.
  • To ensure the doctors are kept appraised at least once per year in line with national standards and ensure with the Hospital Director that all other hospital medical staff receive appraisals in accordance with the Revalidation and Appraisal of Doctors.
  • Jointly with the Hospital Director manage the complaints procedure relating to or having implications for the delivery of clinical services.
  • To manage performance of doctors and disciplinary matters relating to doctors, including probationary reviews. To ensure learning and teaching of medical staff on site through case conferences, peer case discussion etc.
  • To use audit and benchmarking, performance data, learning from incidents and complaints, service user experience feedback and compliance inspections to continuously improve the performance of the clinical team, particularly in relation to medical team.
  • Effectively manage own case load as a Consultant Psychiatrist.
  • Responsibility for site operational matters to the Hospital Director, accountable to the Group Medical Director for professional medical matters, standards delivery of best practice at the site.
  • As a member of the SMT leads the strategy development, implementation and review of the healthcare policy ensuring best practice solutions are viable and comply with legislative and statutory requirements, to support the successful implementation of strategic initiatives within the hospital.
  • Day to day operations will require making decisions to balance and prioritise the oftenconflicting needs and expectations of our patients, staff, central office, and other stakeholders.
  • Working to clear objectives, where professional judgements and/or tactical decisions will have a significant impact within several areas of the business.
  • Assist the Hospital Director and Director of Clinical Services in the critical evaluation of services and the maintenance of an effective clinical governance environment.

Knowledge / Education / Skills:

  • Approved post graduate degree. MRCPsych or equivalent. Will be on the specialist register for their specialty.

Job Description for Hospital Medical Director.

  • The post holder will be expected to have completed appropriate specialist training, have Section 12(2) approval and be an Approved Clinician.
  • Experience will be an experienced consultant psychiatrist who can carry the confidence of the consultant and non-consultant medical staff of the hospital.
  • Communication Strong communication and negotiation skills are required for the effective leadership and management of the consultants.
  • Ability to manage and deal with demanding, difficult situations and a wide range of external agencies, partners, clients, and central office management Working Environment The problems faced by patients and staff may present difficult and challenging situations, which may heighten the physical, sensory and emotional demands of the role.
  • They must ensure they are aware of the local child and adult safeguarding policies and procedures in their service, in addition who to contact within the Local Authority Safeguarding Team for further advice.
  • All colleagues are required to attend safeguarding training appropriate to their role and to undertake additional training in associated areas.
