Machinist / Technician

Permanent, salary: up to £35,000 depending on experience

Based on site in Leyland, Preston

37 hours a week over 4.5 days (Mon – Fri)

Our client is a leading Automotive Test facility, they have an excellent opportunity for a Machinist/Technician to join their team! There are 2 sides to this role; a machinist who can use Milling machines, Jig borers, Centre & Capstan Lathes, Surface and tool grinders to manufacture one-off + small batch components from design drawings. The other side is that of a Technician; assisting test departments with rig assembly, fitting and test support as required.

The successful Machinist / Technician will join a Company offering customisable vehicle testing solutions, which include; proving grounds and laboratories for vehicle engineering and homologation for transport, agricultural and defence industries (amongst others!). Whilst this role is based on site in Leyland, there will be an opportunity to travel as/when required!

What would the Machinist / Technician do?

  • Liaise and work with engineering staff to manufacture parts using Milling machines, Jig borers, Centre & Capstan Lathes, Surface and tool grinders to support the Test Departments
  • Read and review engineering drawings supplied by the test departments, provide time estimates for the required work and any expertise/advice re machining process & tolerances
  • Work flexibly to provide technician support to the test departments as required
  • Order stock and Day to day housekeeping and maintenance of the Machine Shop
  • Provide basic level of facility breakdown diagnostics and resolution
  • Develop initiatives to reduce waste and optimise efficiency

What skills and experience will the Machinist / Technician need?

  • Time served machinist or similar
  • Must be competent at reading engineering drawings and be able to provide expertise/advice as necessary with regard to machining process and tolerances etc. 
  • Must have manual handling experience (up to 25kg maximum), as activities will include bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, hand-eye coordination, and manual dexterity
  • Team player with good interpersonal communication skills
  • Good organisational, analytical, problem-solving skills and basic PC skills.

Advantageous skills / experience:

  • Automotive industry experience
  • Experience with prototype and one-off work
  • Fabrication and welding experience
  • Proficiency in Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Microsoft Office applications
  • Confident in writing risk assessments and awareness of COSHH
  • Strong awareness of Health and Safety regulations
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Forklift truck license
