BUSINESS UNIT AND ROLE OVERVIEW
Wealth Management (WM) provides a comprehensive range of investment services, including discretionary investment management, investment advice, brokerage services, deposit taking and lending, to consumers, wealthy individuals, family offices and related structures worldwide, across a diversified range of asset classes, including equities, fixed income, structured products, derivatives, hedge funds and other alternative investments. WM in EMEA focuses primarily on individuals, families and family offices based in the UK, EU, Switzerland, the Middle East and Africa, who invest through a wide variety of investment vehicles including corporates, trusts, partnerships, regulated and unregulated funds, in a broad range of jurisdictions. Currently, WM in EMEA is supported by lawyers in London, Birmingham, Zurich and Frankfurt, all of whom regularly work closely with colleagues in WM Legal in the US and Asia.
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, proactive and robust candidate who is interested in a broad, challenging and rewarding role. The role requires the ability to work independently from day one and to manage a diverse and complex workload meeting tight deadlines. Lawyers in our team work closely with a diverse group of clients across the WM business and thrive on the pressures of delivering consistently high quality advice to a dynamic and constantly evolving business.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Advising on the legal and regulatory framework for the WM transaction focussed businesses.
  • Advising the WM product specialists on documentation and transactions relating to securities and asset-based lending with opportunities to advise on structured products and derivatives.
  • Advising on the current regulatory regime in the EU and UK and working with internal and external counsel in other jurisdictions related to the business, as well as providing product-based advice on pre and post insolvency enforceability for securities and asset-based lending.
  • Advising Private Wealth Advisors on all aspects of the client relationship, from pitches through to the structuring of accounts, negotiation of transaction documentation, support on transaction-specific questions and new products.
  • Advising senior WM Management on a variety of lending and trading issues, including new products and initiatives, business transformation projects, significant transactions, impact of regulation and issues relating to the structure of the business.
  • Advising and liaising with WM Compliance professionals on a wide range of lending and trading issues, such as interpretation of regulations, significant transactions, account activity and surveillance.
  • Advising on implementation of regulation affecting the transaction businesses - introducing new policies in response to new legislation and revising current policies to meet the needs of the business.
  • Liaising with other lawyers in the Goldman Sachs Legal Division globally in relation to specific product or other issues for example employment and litigation.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • We are looking for a lawyer to join our team in Birmingham and provide advice to the Wealth Management business and are targeting qualified lawyers in the 2-4 years PQE range, although we would also be willing to consider candidates with a different experience profile.
  • Whilst candidates are not expected to have experience in all of the areas covered within WM Legal, candidates will need to demonstrate an understanding of certain of the areas described above, in particular, knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework pertaining to one or more of the following:
    • securities and asset based lending;
    • equity and fixed income securities and the operation of capital markets; or
    • structured products or derivatives.
  • Candidates are expected to have relevant post-qualification experience either with a reputable law firm or as in-house counsel.
  • The candidate should have good English language skills and knowledge of another major European language would be a plus.
