Our client, a well established business who offer procurement solutions to a variety of industries, now have an exciting opportunity for a Head of Procurement to join their team in Greater Manchester to facilitate a planned period of growth.

The successful candidate must have experience in the food industry (catering, foodservice, retail, etc).

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Head of Procurement will be responsible for strategically aligning the purchasing function to the business objectives leveraging opportunities to bring significant commercial advantage to the organisation.

Supported by the purchasing team their primary responsibility will be to manage the supply base, negotiate competitive pricing, monitor KPI’s and ensure adherence to contractual terms.

This is a hands-on role and will involve growing and mentoring the purchasing team, as well as working in partnership with client stakeholders, where they will identify and implement procurement strategies that will deliver tangible results for the organisation.

Key Tasks:

  • Conducting research to ascertain market trends
  • Developing market knowledge and contacts for new products
  • Supporting with the production of Market report
  • Define and scope the departmental structure managing the change process and formulating business cases to justify business change and process improvement activities
  • Managing and mentoring the purchasing team ensuring appropriate personal development plans and objectives are in place
  • Utilise the best technologies to automate & streamline business processes and drive continuous improvement
  • Identifying procurement opportunities to increase business effectiveness, efficiency, productivity and to drive best value
  • Leverage maximum benefit from the supply base through the application of negotiation and competitive tendering processes, as well as working in collaboration with our parent company
  • Negotiating and agreeing supplier contracts and monitoring their progress
  • Identifying potential suppliers and products for new and existing customers
  • Liaising with and actively managing third party suppliers, reviewing quarterly scorecards with the purchasing team and wider business
  • Developing strong business partnerships with suppliers and maximizing reciprocal trading opportunities where possible
  • Writing and reviewing contractual terms to ensure best commercial terms with supplier partners and minimal risk to the Company and its clients
  • Producing and maintaining formal business plans, and managing assigned resources (both internally and externally) to ensure successful delivery to agreed budget and timescales
  • Ensuring all supply partners are fully aligned and actively contributing to the wider companies ESG and net zero plan
  • Defining appropriate performance measures and metrics, and embedding these into processes to demonstrate effectiveness, efficiency and outcomes
  • Supporting & completing tender bids for new business
  • Any other ad-hoc tasks or responsibilities deemed necessary by the Company

Experience Required:

  • Previous experience in a similar purchasing role is essential, as is Food Market knowledge
  • Proven people management experience & the ability to build, develop, mentor and motivate a team
  • Analytical, numerical and fact based
  • Familiar with project management and implementing change
  • Strategic sourcing knowledge
  • A track record of delivering purchasing improvements
  • The ability to cope with the pressure of a demanding role
  • Proficiency with MS Office, including Excel
  • Stakeholder management
  • Ability to present to the Company and clients
  • Effective communication is key including verbal, written and listening skills
  • Ensure urgency and accountability to meet deadlines
  • Lead with integrity
  • Commercial awareness and acumen
  • Excellent interpersonal, influencing, negotiation, networking & commercial skills
