The Opportunity:
Nigel Wright Recruitment is delighted to have been retained by EP UK Investments (EPUKI), to lead the search for a Head of Commercial Innovation & Strategy to join its Business Development Function.  This is a tremendously exciting opportunity to operate at the forefront of the UK power generation industry.  The role is home based, with a requirement for regular UK wide travel, including regular time in London.

About EPUKI:
EPUKI is the UK arm of EPH, a leading European energy company, with strong ambition to grow and develop its footprint in the UK and Ireland.

EPUKI currently operates a range of technologies across six sites (Lynemouth, South Humber Bank, Langage, Kilroot, Ballylumford and Tynaugh) and is one of the largest independent energy generators in the UK and Ireland.  It has multiple large scale development projects within the project pipeline and it is also highly acquisitive.

Through their provision of flexible and reliable energy supply, EPUKI is an enabler of the transition and drive to decarbonisation.  This role is focussed on the future of the fleet and the business and will play a key part in decarbonising the energy industry.  The position is both technical and commercial role, focussed on proactively identifying short, medium and long-term opportunities, and presents an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of EPUKI.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintaining a deep understanding of the electricity market to proactively identify opportunities to increase current and future value for EPUKI.
  • Understanding the market drivers and regulatory framework, such that the business development strategy delivers significant incremental revenue to the Business.
  • Engaging with national government, regulators, system operators, trade organisations and other such bodies, to network, identify opportunities and promote EPUKI within the industry.
  • Attending conferences and industry events to keep up to date with the latest technologies.
  • Involvement in M & A activity that EPUKI undertakes, to understand whether additional value can be brought to any future acquisition, through the delivery of additional power generation, grid stability, ancillary, or related services.
  • Proactively reviewing new power generation, grid stability, ancillary services, or related opportunities (e.g. hydrogen, carbon capture & storage).
  • Developing technical and commercial solutions, using either existing EPUKI assets, or new build plants.
  • Undertaking technical assessments of new commercial opportunities.
  • Working with the Corporate Finance Team to understand the commercial benefits of any new products and determine the best overall bidding strategy.
  • Creating specifications for development studies, equipment supply, construction and installation, and operating as part of the Tender Evaluation Team for such projects.

Role Requirements:
  • Excellent understanding of the UK power generation market and its commercial drivers, as well as future industry trends, challenges and opportunities.
  • Good understanding of the role of national government, regulators and system operators in the UK power market.
  • Deep technical understanding of the operation of power generation sites such as CCGT, coal, biomass and other similar power generation plants, with the emphasis on generation equipment, grid stability and ancillary services.
  • Significant experience of new development projects in the power generation industry.
  • Excellent understanding  of business financial drivers with the ability to understand financial metrics and information.
  • Degree qualified in a relevant technical discipline, such as electrical engineering.
