Your own commitment to learning and knowledge sharing sets the standard for others

The opportunity

At GLD, our vision is to be an outstanding legal organisation and a brilliant place to work where everyone can thrive and fulfil their potential. Our talent programmes are focused on supporting people, irrespective of background, to achieve their potential and thrive. As a Senior Knowledge Development Lawyer in our Employment Group, you will be at the heart of this commitment. You will act as a role model, working on your own learning and development as you support others in theirs.

At the same time, you’ll benefit from our mission to recruit and retain the good people – and to get the best from them. We strive to offer a good work-life balance, which includes flexible working policies¸ generous paid maternity and paternity leave, and workplace adjustments put in place for those who need them.

The role

Your challenge is to develop the knowledge management (KM) function in the Employment Group. This will include overseeing the induction of new lawyers to the division, providing support and training, and assessing capability. At the same time, you will foster a culture of knowledge sharing and learning. And, working closely with the Legal Director and senior leadership team, you will help to develop strategy and continuous improvement of the KM offering.

Providing employment litigation and advisory services to the majority of Government Departments, the GLD’s Employment Group is an excellent setting for your expertise. Our work covers everything from complex multi-party litigation to advising on staff policies and terms and conditions, collective bargaining and departmental re-organisations. Along the way we have the opportunity to learn about the working lives of a vast range of public servants and office holders, including prison officers, judicial office-holders, border force officers, the armed forces and policy officials.

About you

You’re an established and experienced lawyer with a sound understanding of employment law gained through advising clients and conducting cases in employment tribunals across a broad range of issues. Qualified to practise as a Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales, you have minimum of a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent). With strong analytical and intellectual skills, you’re an exceptional communicator, able to explain complex issues to a variety of audiences. You also have the management capabilities to deliver a high-quality service, from planning to collaboration to problem-solving.

About us

The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments. From roads to rivers, health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life. From developing and drafting legislation to helping to secure economic and trade relationships, providing legal advice on polices to ensuring value from contracts, our work is stimulating and varied.
