Electronics Engineer

Location: Staplehurst, TN12 0DS
Salary: £35K - £40K per annum, DOE
Hours: 40hrs, Monday – Friday
Contract: Full time, Permanent

We are Magnetic Shields Limited (MSL), a family run company who are the industry leader in the design and manufacture of magnetically shielded products and rooms.

Our brand new factory unit and Fibre laser with full stock automation has doubled our production capacity and throughput.

Our current period of expansion is a very exciting time for the company and we are looking to speak to applicants who are interested in joining our R&D team as an Electronics Engineer!

As our Electronics Engineer you will assume responsibility for:

  • Working with physicists and other engineering colleagues on the design, development, documentation and practical build of repeating products to meet customer expectations within tight timescales.
  • Experimental set up realisation and measurement of magnetic fields across a range of frequencies from DC (0 Hz) to VLF (3-30 kHz), for both research and technical support purposes.
  • Design, construction, and operation of compensation coil systems for nullifying magnetic fields, and systems for the degaussing of large magnetic shielding enclosures.
  • Set up and operate tests both in-house and externally, whilst documenting procedures and reporting results.
  • Communicating with customers to generate design requirements and provide technical support, which can involve site visits
  • Working within the team on product development with low noise electronics (Amplifiers, DAQ)
  • Continued product design development on existing electronic equipment
  • Collaborating with universities and external partners in the development of coil technology and other relevant electronics for diverse commercial and research applications
  • Ensuring product development complies to relevant CE standards
  • Defining and documenting suitable parts in order to meet customer requirements is a key requirement.
  • Helping to shape the development of an expanding electronics department

Essential Skills:

  • Hold a relevant engineering degree in the field of electronics engineering
  • 2-5 years relevant and transferable experience
  • Extensive experience in circuit design and PCB layout ideally with Altium, with knowledge on manufacturability and designing for CE
  • Excellent analogue and digital fundamentals, ideally with low-noise design experience
  • Experience with MRP/ERP systems including creation of BOMS and routings, ideally Progress Plus
  • Practical & workshop experience with a range of electronic measurement and signal generation equipment
  • Experience of providing technical documentation
  • Keen eye for detail and analytical ability
  • Excellent IT skills with strong knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project
  • Ability to demonstrate logical and reasoned approach to problem solving
  • Strong initiative and ability to work autonomously on projects
  • Excellent computer skills & data presentation
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety requirements
  • Self-motivated in approach with strong communication skills, including liaising with other departments and employees

It would be great if you had:

  • Experience with microcontrollers/microprocessors (PIC, ST32 ARM, etc)
  • Experience with FPGA’s (Xilinx)
  • Experience designing multi-layer flex circuits with awareness of manufacturability
  • Experience coding with C++/Embedded C, LabView
  • Excellent understanding for the generation and testing of DC & AC magnetic fields
  • An awareness of EMI shielding techniques and a familiarity with EMI testing standards, i.e.: MIL-STD or IEEE
  • Excellent understanding of computer aided design techniques and familiarity with MCAD software such as Inventor
  • An ability to support off-site work with potential for occasional UK and overseas travel
