Design Project Manager – Programme management team

Salary from £46,309.00 dependent on experience

Up to 10% bonus

Permanent role 40 hours per week

Network wide based out of Leeds or Sunderland

We have an amazing opportunity for a Design Project Manager (PM) to be based in either our Leeds or Sunderland offices.  Working in a team that oversees the CAPEX investment and design programme the role will be to develop and own the short to medium term strategy for several CAPEX assets. This will involve achieving the high-level strategy set out in the RIIO-2 business plan submission via the identification and progression of sites/assets for investment. You will be the driving force from the scoping phase all the way through investment and up to G17 Part C stage (Design Completion). The successful applicant will become the focal point for specific asset classes and will be able to answer any capex/strategy related queries from the business.  

Key accountabilities and responsibilities


•    As a PM you will be responsible for managing design packages of CAPEX work varying in scope, size and value

•    Through your working within the wider team, as a Design PM, you will be responsible for generating scopes of work; tendering projects; managing designs and associated queries; procuring long lead materials; sanctioning projects and be a specific point of contact for various asset categories

•    You will be responsible for providing accurate programme, cost updates and production of MI to colleagues to allow for the accurate forecasting of resources across the wider business

•    As a Design PM you will also be responsible for ensuring all stakeholders (internal and external) are kept well informed on any scheme progress and any updates as and when they may be required

•    Produce and deliver; CAPEX Asset Strategy Documents, Business Cases, Cost Benefit Analysis Reports, for all work on our Network Assets 

•    With reference to NGN’s RIIO-2 Business Strategy, plan future year’s CAPEX project design, procurement, and delivery phases by input of data into our CAPEX Project Planning Tracker

•    Provide CAPEX business strategy/programme management support to all Delivery Project Managers within the current CAPEX Programme

What we are looking for

•    Knowledge of regulations applicable to the construction industry, CDM Regulations 2015. This will be alongside HS&E team and include knowledge of principal designer and designer roles and responsibilities through design and construction phases’

•    Comprehension of engineering principles and an ability to apply learning across different engineering disciplines

•    You will need to be able to demonstrate financial management and commercial acumen alongside excellent leadership, influencing and negotiating, customer orientation and communication skills, whilst providing the ability to support, communicate and effectively develop working relationships

•    Ability to demonstrate an understanding of programme management and preferably be able to use planning software tools to create and or update programmes 

•    You will be capable of using MS Office software, and preferably the experience of working with SAP

•    Knowledge of how the gas network operates and working within the gas industry would be beneficial to your role as well as managing and delivering engineering contracts (ideally NEC3 or NEC4) 

•    Asset Management qualification and or knowledge

•    Educated to degree level in a relevant engineering discipline would be advantageous in this role

•    Starting salary from £46,309

•    5 days annual leave (plus recognised bank holidays and 2 half days over the Christmas period)
