Job Title: Design Manager - Major Highways Scheme

They are currently seeking a talented and experienced Design Manager to lead the design process for a prestigious £200 million highways scheme in Oxford.

Role Overview: As the Design Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the design process for the £200+ million highways scheme, serving as the design lead and ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality design solutions that meet project requirements and objectives. You will collaborate closely with internal teams, external consultants, and stakeholders to develop innovative design concepts, manage the design process from concept to completion, and maintain compliance with regulatory standards and project specifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design team and manage the design process for the £200 million highways scheme, from initial concept development to detailed design and construction documentation.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, external consultants, and client representatives to understand project requirements, objectives, and constraints, ensuring alignment of design solutions with project goals.
  • Develop and implement innovative design concepts and solutions that optimize functionality, efficiency, and sustainability while adhering to budgetary constraints and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, architects, planners, and environmental specialists, to integrate design elements and ensure seamless project delivery.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of design drawings, specifications, and technical documentation, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with industry standards and best practices.
  • Manage the design review process, including internal design reviews, client presentations, and regulatory approvals, addressing feedback and resolving design-related issues in a timely manner.
  • Monitor design progress and performance against project milestones and budgetary constraints, implementing corrective measures as necessary to mitigate risks and maintain project schedule.
  • Foster a culture of creativity, collaboration, and excellence within the design team, promoting innovation, professional development, and continuous improvement.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, or related field.
  • Proven experience as a Design Manager or similar role, with a track record of successfully leading design teams on large-scale infrastructure projects, ideally in the highways sector.
  • Strong knowledge of design principles, standards, and practices related to highways and transportation infrastructure, with a focus on safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and resolve complex design-related issues.
  • Proficiency in design software and tools, such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Civil 3D, or similar.
  • Familiarity with relevant design standards and regulations, including DMRB, Highways England standards, and local authority requirements.
  • Previous experience working on highways projects in the UK is highly desirable.
