Our client in Manchester is seeking to recruit an experienced Solicitor to join this top tier Criminal Defence department. The firm is a highly respected law firm that specialise in motoring criminal defence law in the UK. Recognised as industry leaders with offices nationally, employing a wealth of experience, providing expert legal representation and guidance to clients. This law firm does not deal with legal aid and only deals with private paying clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive legal advice to clients regarding their rights, potential defences, and the legal implications of their situation.
  • Conduct thorough case analysis and investigation to build a robust defence.
  • Represent clients in court proceedings, including bail hearings, pre-trial conferences, plea negotiations, trials, and sentencing hearings. As your role is office based you will not be required to attend any court hearings and will instruct outside counsel to attend court.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to stay up to date with relevant statutes, case laws, and precedents that may impact your clients' cases.
  • Liaising with Barristers on cases and collaborate on legal strategy.
  • Flexibility to support issues that may occur out of hours on a rotational basis. This would be telephone only (one evening 5-8pm or weekend day/evening 10am-7pm).
  • Collaborate with other professionals, such as forensic experts, psychologists, or investigators, to strengthen any defence strategy.
  • Uphold the ethical standards of the legal profession, maintain client confidentiality, act in the best interests of clients, and adhere to the professional rules and codes of conduct.
Person Requirements
  • You will be a calm and considerate team player, technically minded, fearless and professional, innovative, a real people person with the intellectual desire and skill to analyse and apply the law to deliver solutions. You will probably have already been told by your colleagues that you are commercially aware with an abundance of common sense and highly empathetic approach to client care that makes you stand out from the crowd.
  • Efficiency is important as you will need to be organised and able to work quickly whilst under pressure and juggling multiple deadlines / priorities;
  • Have a professional attitude, high integrity and ability to be empathetic, approachable and non-judgemental of our clients and the allegations they face often including drink driving and drug driving;
  • Enthusiastic, resilient and have a can-do attitude and helpful to all team members;
  • Have an inquisitive mind, use your own initiative to find answers or solve problems and
  • Willing to listen, learn, embrace training and improvement of your knowledge in this niche area.
  • Ability to be adaptable to changing circumstances, keeping up with legal developments and adjusting your strategy to best serve the interest of the client.
Skills and competencies
  • At least 3 year’s experience in motoring law and defending motoring offences in a client facing role with experience of running your own caseload, both guilty and not guilty pleas.
  • Confident communicator, both over the telephone and in writing (with excellent grammar, spelling and attention to detail);
  • Strong negotiation skills to represent clients effectively.
  • At least 1 year’s experience using Proclaim (or a similar case management system);
  • Strong written and IT skills including Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail with excellent standards of spelling and grammar.
  • Excellent analytical skills to research, understand and disseminate information.
