As an apprentice quantity surveyor working in the commercial team which will see you building new skills, while applying your knowledge to real-world live projects. There will be plenty of opportunities to explore your potential and you’ll enjoy full support from your line manager.

The team/department is responsible for the commercial management of Johnson Controls projects as an apprentice you will be given the opportunity to learn and contribute to a variety of Johnson Controls projects.

What you will do: 

  • Understand the role and main requirements of a Quantity Surveyor.
  • Learn about key contract items that pose commercial risk to a project.
  • Support the assigned Quantity Surveyor on a project, including handling both upstream and downstream contractual correspondence.
  • Grasp high-level commercial basics related to challenges that a Quantity Surveyor might encounter.
  • Oversee the commercial aspects of increasingly higher value/risk projects with minimal guidance from the team.
  • Review contracts and propose, negotiate, and agree on amendments with the client.
  • Issue contract notices in accordance with contracted terms and conditions.
  • Escalate and implement remedial or corrective actions to align projects with the agreed contractual basis, budget, and/or timescale.
  • Manage change management processes and implement necessary improvements.
  • This role is primarily office-based, with potential site visits. Travel for educational purposes may be required.
  • Support team members in preparing documents such as payment applications, with the assistance of the Commercial Team.
  • Participate in a secondment to other business areas, including estimating, procurement, and operations.
  • Progress to independently manage the commercial aspects of increasingly higher value/risk projects.

How you will do it:    ? 

  • On-the-Job Work Experience: You'll spend significant time at our client sites, where you will get the opportunity to put into practice skills learned at college in a real world setting.  
  • Collaboration with Qualified Surveyors: Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll work closely with qualified Johnson Controls Employees who will serve as mentors, guiding you in developing your design skills. This collaborative environment ensures that you receive the support and guidance needed to succeed in your role. 
  • You will be enrolled on a Level 4 qualification that you will study alongside your new role. You’ll enjoy the full support of your mentor and our dedicated apprentice training team. 
  • Opportunities for Growth: Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll have the opportunity to grow and apply the skills and knowledge gained in college in a real workplace setting. This experiential learning approach ensures that you develop both technical competencies and practical skills essential for success in the world of quantity surveying.

Training and Qualifications: 

  • This is a 3 year degree apprenticeship. You will be enrolled on a level 4 construction quantity surveying technician.
  • Travel and Accommodation: If you're required to stay away from home for college or work-related purposes, the company will cover the costs of travel, accommodation, and meals. This ensures that you can focus on your education and training without financial burden. 

Career Progression: 

  • Upon completion, a number of internal opportunities within the company will be available to you. All of our apprentices immediately move into full time permanent positions. 

Qualifications Required: 

  • GCSE or equivalent in English (Grade 5) 
  • GCSE or equivalent in Math’s (Grade 5) 
  • Full Driving License is desirable.

  • Excellent work ethic and willingness to improve. 
  • Availability to travel.

What happens next? 

  • Suitable candidates will have a screening call with a recruiter to discuss the position and provide necessary documentation. Afterward, you will be invited to an assessment center in May, assessment centers typically include a combination of activities such as group problem-solving tasks, individual interviews, and presentations. 
  • Within 48 hours of the assessment center, candidates will receive a response regarding the outcome of their application. If successful, they can begin the apprenticeship on September 2, 2024.
