Why take this Workplace First Aid course?

This Workplace First Aid course online has been designed as a clear & efficient way for business to enhance their first aid arrangements.

The First Aid Regulations require businesses to make arrangements, such that staff receive timely & appropriate care when required. This includes both injuries resulting from workplace accidents and illnesses due to natural causes.

Workplace First Aid training enables staff to recognise emergencies, know when to call emergency services and potentially improve the patient’s outcomes by applying the most basic interventions. For example keeping the patient warm and comfortable, prior to the arrival of emergency services.

What are common Workplace First Aid emergencies?

First aid regulations require appropriate first aid to be provided to staff if they are injured at work and if they become ill due to a person health issue.

Common injuries at work will depend on your workplace. Your first aid needs assessment, which all business must undertake, will consider which injuries are most likely. From 2021 RIDDOR statistics we know generally;

  • 1.6 million working people suffering from a work-related illness
  • 2,369 mesothelioma deaths due to past asbestos exposures (2019)
  • 142 workers killed at work (2020/21)
  • 693,000 working people sustain an injury at work according to the Labour Force Survey
  • 65,427 injuries to employees
  • 38.8 million working days lost due to work-related illness and workplace injury
  • £16.2 billion estimated cost of injuries and ill health from current working conditions (2018/19)

From the 65,427 RIDDOR report injuries (Injuries leading to 7 days or more off work) we know the type of work done is the biggest risk factor. Shift and part-time workers are most likely to be injuries;

The cause of accidents are;

  • 29% slips and trips on the same level
  • 19% handling, lifting or carrying
  • 11% struck by a moving object
  • 9% acts of violence
  • 8% falls from height

As a consequence of these accidents, Fractures (other than to fingers, thumbs or toes) account for around 90% of all reported injuries in 2019/20.

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
