Individuals living with mental health issues experience stigma, prejudice and discrimination which has an impact on their well-being and quality of life. Recognising where, how and when this occurs is the first step to challenging and reducing this.

  • A survey in May 2021 by Rethink found that out of 500 people severely affected by mental illness, 88% reported discrimination.
  • Time to Change in 2014 found that over one-third of the general public think people with a mental health condition are likely to be violent.
  • Poor mental health negatively affects individuals and their families through poor educational achievements, lower incomes, lower quality of life and lower life expectancy. (World Health Organisation 2013).
  • 300,000 people living with a long term mental health condition lose their jobs every year, twice as many as those without a mental health condition. (Stevens, D. Farmer, P (2017)
