Description
Section 1: Different substances and drugs
This section defines the terms substance and drugs, explores different types of drugs and looks at how different drugs and substances can be categorised. Learners will look at the common names used for each drug as well as the methods people use to take them and the effects they experience as a result. The reliability of drugs is also covered in this section and learners will look at useful sources which provide help and advice around drugs and substances.
Section 2: Why people take drugs and the laws surrounding drugs
Learners will gain knowledge about the reasons why people choose to take drugs, including factors from their background and lifestyle which may affect their decisions. This section also looks as the classification of drugs and the laws surrounding drugs, including the penalty and punishment people will face if they choose to get involved with drugs.
Section 3: The effects of substance misuse
This section explores the effects that drugs can have on various parts of a person’s life, including their health, finances, personal safety and social life. Other topics that are covered include the dangers of using substances as well as the risks and desired effects that are associated with each one. The learner will also look at the effect substance misuse has on society as a whole.
Section 4: Perceptions of substance misuse
In this final section, learners will look at the different stereotypes that are linked with drugs and substances and how the perceptions of drugs can be influenced by media reports. Useful sources that can be used to find the extent of substance misuse are explored in this unit as well as the different ways that substance misuse can be responded to.
