Overview

If you want to develop your knowledge of Sports Psychology so that you can embark on a rewarding career or you are already working in a related field and want to improve your career prospects, then this is the course for you.

The Distance Learning Sports Psychology Diploma course focuses on the scientific study of people and their behaviours in sport contexts and the practical application of that knowledge.

Each module of this Level 3 Sports Psychology Diploma course contains associated revision exercises and activity questions which have been designed to enable students to demonstrate their underpinning knowledge and show how this can be applied in various contexts.

One important consideration when taking on a new course of study is to find what the subject may entail.  As such the following extract is included in order for the reader to gain an overall impression of the type of work a sport and exercise psychologist undertakes:

‘The application of psychology to sport and exercise settings is a relatively new field which is rapidly developing and expanding.  This branch of psychology is concerned with understanding the behaviour, mental processes, and well-being of people who are involved in sport and exercise.  Practitioners typically specialise in either the sport or exercise branches, though some work equally in both fields.

Sport and exercise psychologists work with individuals, teams, and organisations in a wide range of contexts.  Examples of their work include:

  • Helping elite performers to develop preparation strategies to deal with the demands of competition and training
  • Applying research into motor learning and psychophysiological processes to maximise practice and fitness regimes
  • Assisting coaches, managers, and referees with enhancing their interpersonal and communication skills
  • Counselling injured athletes during their rehabilitation
  • Advising youth sport performers travelling to international fixtures on how to deal with disappointment, homesickness, and family problems
  • Working with health promotion staff to increase exercise
  • Motivation and adherence in sedentary individuals
  • Facilitating an optimal 'motivational climate' for the clients of exercise instructors
  • Optimising the psychosocial benefits that cardiac rehabilitation patients can gain from their exercise involvement ’ (bps website Division of Sport and Exercise).

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
