Overview

This two-day course aims to give candidates the knowledge and confidence to identify signs of mental health problems in the workplace and to qualify as a Mental Health First Aider.


The qualification will provide candidates with the skills to identify those who require mental health support and the confidence to offer assistance when required.


The knowledge and tools gained will enable them to deliver Mental Health First Aid before professional medical treatment is available.

  • Identify what is meant by the term Mental Health and Mental Health First Aid.
  • The Mental Health Continuum.
  • Understand how poor Mental Health can affect employers.
  • Understand why positive Mental Health is important to employees.
  • Recognise contributory factors of work-related stress.
  • Identify role as a Mental Health First Aider including own self-care.
  • Understand the legislation associated with Mental Health in the workplace.
  • Identify employer’s moral duty to employees regarding Mental Health and well-being.
  • Understand how employers can promote a culture of positive Mental Health.
  • Active listening skills.
  • Main signs and symptoms of mental health disorders, crises and problems including:
  • Suicide
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Phobias
  • Bipolar
  • Self-Harm
  • Psychosis
  • Work-Related Stress and Other
  • Anxiety disorders

  • How to introduce Core Standards for Mental Health in the workplace.
  • Identify support for those who are experiencing Mental Health issues.
  • Be able to identify sources of reliable information, support and guidance.
  • State provisions available to those off work with Mental Health issues.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for anyone who would like to become a Mental Health First Aider in their workplace.

Requirements

Candidates are not required to have any prior knowledge or qualifications in first aid to enable them to attend this course.


However, it is recommended that candidates have a minimum of Level 1 in Literacy/English or equivalent to undertake this qualification. Candidates should be aged 18 or above.

  • Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work qualification.
