Overview

You may have wondered why people do the things they do! If that is the case then you will find this Psychology course fascinating. The Distance Learning Psychology course studies the mind and behaviour and you will discover how psychologists have come a long way in understanding human behaviour and the mental processes that underlie our actions.

In this Psychology course, you cover:

  • How scientists have studied the mind, brain and behaviour
  • How our understanding of the world develops as we grow up
  • How much we are influenced by other people
  • How our thoughts and actions are related to brain activity
  • How memory works, why we forget, and how to improve your memory
  • How psychologists explain personality and intelligence
  • How psychology can be applied in the real world

The Psychology course is divided into twelve modules. After introducing you to the main scientific approaches in psychology (module 1), we guide you through the core areas of developmental psychology (modules 2 and 3), social psychology (modules 4 and 5), biological psychology (modules 6 and 7), cognitive psychology (modules 8 and 9) and individual differences (modules 10 and 11). The course is concluded with a look at how these aspects of psychology can help you understand your own behaviour better as well as how they can be applied in a professional setting (module 12).

Key features of the Psychology course include: ‘Setting the scene’ boxes: These describe relevant, and sometimes surprising, case studies that illustrate points that are made in the main text. ‘From the archives’ boxes: These make reference to key research studies published in academic journals. These bring you into contact with the methods and procedures used by psychologists to test and develop their theories. ‘Have a go’ boxes: These encourage active learning, in which you are more involved and engaged in the learning process. Targeted suggestions for further reading.

The Psychology course has been written by Dr Matthew Smith. Matthew Smith is a former Associate Professor of Psychology at Liverpool Hope University with nearly 20 years’ experience of teaching and research in Psychology.

His work in the media even included a stint as the resident psychologist/parapsychologist on the television show Most Haunted. Elizabeth Ottley is a postgraduate student in Psychology.

Please note: that you will need to carry out additional research in order to receive the Diploma upon completion. This aspect has been included in order to improve the learners research skills.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
