Description

Philosophy Course

Vita online Learning and Education devised course

Of all the places you could be, of all the web pages you could be looking at, why this one?

Socrates (469 – 399 BC) said: ‘The unexamined life is not worth living’. At some time, who hasn’t asked: Why am I here? Why am I here, now?

Down the ages, questions like these have led men and women to search and search. A few seem to have found, if not all the answers, then ways of tackling such questions that helped them to enjoy richer, less stressful and more useful lives.

This course of ten modules, called Philosophy, looks to some of the great philosophical traditions for direction and inspiration. Among subjects explored are: Consciousness; Wisdom; Peace; Life in the Present; Injustice; Being Yourself.

What does the course cover?

The course draws on some of the world’s great philosophic teachings. Topics include

The nature of wisdom

Self-discovery and self-knowledge

Different levels of awareness and wakefulness

The power of mindfulness and the present moment

What it means to live justly

The nature of beauty

The light of reason

The nature of energy and how best to use energy

Finding unity in diversity

The desire for truth

There is no attempt to cover all philosophical systems, but there is plenty for anyone interested in the big questions of life and the world around us. The course includes ideas put forward by Socrates, Plato, Confucius, the Bible, Buddha, Epicurus, Emerson, Vivekananda and Maharaja Shri Shantananda Saraswati, a modern exponent of the philosophy of unity or Advaita.

The ten module synopsis is as follows:

Module 1. Why study philosophy? Philosophy and wisdom. The nature of wisdom. The wisdom within.

Module 2. Self discovery, Self knowledge. Who or what am I? What is my potential? How may I realise that potential?

Module 3. Different levels of awareness. What is our usual state of awareness? Are there greater levels of awareness? If so, how may we gain access to them?

Module 4. Living in the present moment, the now. Mindfulness. What is the potential of the present moment? The relationship between attention and the present moment.

Module 5. What is justice and what is injustice? What does it mean to live justly, under the guidance of wisdom? Plato’s views.

Module 6. How to understand and use energy well and avoid misusing it.

Module 7. The light of reason. How can reason enrich our lives and the lives of those around us? Two practical exercises.

Module 8. What is beauty? What is its purpose? Where does it come from? Is there such a think as absolute beauty? Plato’s views.

Module 9. Finding unity in diversity, the common thread of life. What is the effect of being separated from unity?

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
