Outline Drawing is one of the most important foundation skills in drawing and art.
In this course you will discover many professional drawing methods and techniques to help you rapidly develop a high standard of drawing in outline.
Along the way you will also be refining your ability to compare angles, lines and curves to a horizontal or vertical line.
To set the scene for your success we show you how to prepare your area for regular and committed drawing practice.
Next we dive straight in to begin training your eye-mind-hand coordination with some deceptively simple looking but challenging exercises.
You will rapidly develop a high standard of outline drawing skills as you learn to use several valuable methods and techniques that professionals use.
The final two weeks of this unit culminate in a challenging and rewarding drawing project to further strengthen your newly acquired outline drawing skills.
Course Format
This course is the first in a series of six course units (available here for purchase on Reed.co.uk) which together form the Complete Drawing Course.
The course unit contains five weeks of study notes plus a two week final project (presented as a series of pdf eBooks).
It is recommended that you study between 2 and 4 hours per week to complete the course in 7 weeks.
You will have 3 months access to the course materials in the members area.

Week One: Getting Comfortable
- What pencil to use for drawing
- A special way to hold your pencil for drawing
- Drawing practice
- Copy patterns to begin training your artist’s eye
Week Two: Traditional Methods of Drawing
- The process of creating original drawings
- Introduction to Construction Drawing
- How to draw a perfect circle any size
- Drawing the Ellipse correctly
- Using the pencil measuring technique with construction drawing
- Draw a cartoon version of a Bassett Hound
Week Three: Construction Drawing
- Using your ruler with construction drawing
- Draw a man-made object using your ruler and construction drawing
Week Four: Grid Method
- How to use the grid method with extreme accuracy
- A Grid Method drawing of either ‘Buzzy Bee’ or ‘Little Blue Wren’
Week Five: Pencil Strokes
- Learn six pencil techniques; Shading, Broad Strokes, Chisel Point, Fine Lines Hatching, Cross-Hatching
- Practice project: ‘The Old Hayshed’ – create your first completed drawing of a landscape by adding all six pencil strokes in the areas specified
Week Six & Seven: Final Project
- Project: Using the grid method, copy the construction drawing of ‘Frangipani Dreams’
- Draw the outline image within your construction drawing
- Transfer your final drawing to quality paper
