Overview

The collection and storing of excessive numbers of belongings significantly affects a resident’s ability to live in their home.

It creates a fire risk in over 70% of cases and can cause serious problems to everyone involved including neighbours and housing management. A clear understanding of the principal characteristics of hoarding behaviour is necessary before developing a management strategy to address its consequences and prevent repetition.

This course transitions from understanding to identifying key elements for a management strategy. It provides a way forward through the legal process if a voluntary approach has not produced the necessary improvement. Managers, team leaders and frontline staff will benefit from the learning offered by this course.

Module 1. Hoarding in context

Module 2. Hoarding and mental health

Module 3. Hoarding and legal action

This Managing Hoarding course focusses on:

  • Developing an awareness of the main characteristics of hoarding
  • Creating an effective strategy based on objective criteria and risk assessments
  • Implementing a positive management approach
  • Understanding the complexities surrounding legal action and achieving the right result, including the impact of mental health.

The key topics for this course have been broken down into lessons, each lesson dealing with a specific area of the overall subject. Each one has clearly set learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

You can progress through the course at your own pace. If you need to leave the course, it will remember where you left off, so when you return there is no need to repeat steps. We often include external links, videos, webpages, downloads, which provide excellent resource files.

At the end of each lesson is a knowledge checkpoint, you will need to achieve more than 75% to pass the lesson, which then unlocks the following lesson. Upon completion of the final lesson your certificate will be unlocked. You can save this as a PDF to your computer or simply print it off.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
