Overview

You may well be considering a completely new career, or have been in a secretarial position for a while, when you consider taking on this challenging role to advance your career as a Legal Secretary.

Your role will be to assist in the smooth running of law firms by giving full support to lawyers and legal executives. You will be a significant member of a team of professionals who work together. Your work will be varied and will be very rewarding. You will deal with a wide range of challenging legal and administrative tasks, combining your knowledge, understanding and skills with modern technology to the essential production of accurate documents on which every facet of our lives revolve.

As law firms can specialise in areas such as Criminal Law, Conveyancing, Civil Litigation, Matrimonial Law or Company Law, to name but a few, you will develop an expertise in the field you have chosen. Perhaps you will progress to become a paralegal like many others before you.

This Diploma can be studied in any our Reading Training Centre, at Bowman House, Bridge Street, Reading, RG1 2LU. Many of the subjects are also accessible via our distance learning platform, meaning you can combine your studies with existing home and work obligations.
Once you’ve successfully completed your training and received your Pitman Training Diploma, you’ll be in the perfect position to go on and gain the Level 2 City & Guilds/CILEx Legal Secretary Qualification.

or Keyboard Speed Development (up to 70 words per minute)
or Core 2 Typaz Professional (high proficiency touch-typing and keyboard skills)
Working in a Legal Environment (different organisational structures of a legal office, the UK judicial system, how to organise resources and manage time effectively in a legal environment, the different types of correspondence and much more)
Legal Audio Processing (six different legal specialisms, including Family Law, Conveyancing and Criminal Litigation and gain an understanding of the documentation that needs to be transcribed in each area)
Legal Text Processing (various forms of documentation, terminology and processes associated with six different legal specialisms including Family Law, Criminal Litigation and Conveyancing)
Audio Transcription
Effective Business Communication (business letters, email, phone and presentations)
Microsoft Word
or Microsoft Word Expert (advanced word processing skills including mail merge, creating graphs, creating and running macros, creating an index, table of contents and more)

or Microsoft Excel Expert (advanced spreadsheet skills, covering importing and exporting data, creating templates, linking workbooks, data tools, analysis and pivot tables)

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered.
