Overview

Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine which is based on the principle of “The Law of Similars” - the principle of like curing like - a substance which can cause symptoms in a healthy individual can also be used to treat those symptoms when they manifest as part of a disease. It was developed about 200 years ago by a German Doctor called Samuel Hahnemann - a medic disillusioned with the ineffective and often barbaric treatments of the day. Homeopaths do not treat physical, emotional and mental symptoms separately but take the view that they are all interconnected as facets of the patient’s suffering. This is what makes homeopathy a truly holistic and refined art. Because the central principle requires the use of medicines that are often derived from toxic sources, homeopathic preparations are made in a special way which involves repeatedly diluting and shaking the medicines until they contain virtually no trace of the original substance. It is thought that the processes of preparation somehow imprint a characteristic energy pattern or blueprint of the substance onto the water in which they are diluted.

This fully certified Homeopathy Diploma Course is a comprehensive guide to setting up a homeopathy practice. This course will teach you the principles of ethical homeopathic practice which will prepare and guide you into practicing general homeopathy for yourself, your clients and for your family. The course will cover how you can use homeopathic nutrition to help your clients over come ailments and rediscover their health and well being.

Description

How Homeopathy Works

Simply put, the term homeopathy is composed of two different Greek words-‘homeo’ meaning similar and ‘pathos’ meaning disease. The entire system of homeopathic medicine is based on one simple principle-like cures like, which is best explained using the law of similars, which we are about to discuss next.

The law of similars

To better understand the law of similars, which was originally proposed by ancient physicians and practitioners, we’ll go through a few examples.

#1 Coffee Connection: Coffee, rich in caffeine has a powerful effect on the body and produces effects including racing thoughts, excitability, restlessness, increased urine production and an inability to sleep. An individual suffering from insomnia, restlessness, anxiousness and similar symptoms can, in turn, be calmed down by giving them a preparation of Coffea cruda, which is simply a preparation of coffee.

#2 The Onion Link: A simple onion, too can explain the law of similars in the most simplest, easiest way. Chopping onions often causes symptoms like watery eyes and a running nose; which is strikingly similar to the symptoms experienced by people suffering from Hay fever, which is why, homeopaths prescribe a dose of Allium cepa (a preparation of red onions) to people suffering from the disease.

#3 Stimulants for Over-Stimulated Ones: Conventional medicinal practices too, use the law of similars without actually knowing it; a simple example to demonstrate it would be Dexamphetamine and Methylphenidate hydrochloride, both of which are commonly known as Ritalin. They are generally frontline treatments for hyperactivity and hyperactivity disorders; despite the fact that scientists are still unable to understand how it calms down over-stimulated and hyperactive children.

Homeopaths, on the other hand, admit that both these drugs are capable of producing hyperactiveness and energetic behavior in normal children; which is why, they are an effective treatment for hyperactive kids.

Hahnemann’s concept-The very term ‘homeopathy’ was coined by Hahnemann. Hahnemann first understood and introduced the concept of like cures like when he, in an attempt to better understand the effects of the cinchona bark in curing malaria (which was a theory put forward by the Scottish physician William Cullen), himself ingested the bark, and noticed that it produced symptoms (shivering, fever, joint pain) similar to malaria itself.

It was that moment when Hahnemann felt some truth in the sayings of ancient physicians regarding the ‘law of similars.’

The concept behind homeopathic provings- In an attempt to take his observations and studies further to the next level, Hahnemann began to test and observe the effects of different other substances in humans-a procedure known as proving. He started recording the symptoms observed by ingesting certain substances and herb extract, and soon, prepared a collection of 65 remedies for his book Materia Medica Pura.

He also believed that large doses of the ‘substance’ that caused similar symptoms in healthy humans could aggravate the condition and make it more severe; instead, diluting it could preserve its natural therapeutic and medicinal properties and make it ideal for curing the patient. He also believed that this dilution of substances could arouse the power of crude substances, thereby rendering them useful, and soon after, he penned down a complete overview of the system of medicine developed by him in his book The Organon of the Healing Artwhich is still used by homeopathic medicine practitioners today.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
