Overview

The IGCSE Biology course will help you build on your enjoyment of the study of living organisms and learn the importance of accurate experimental work in scientific method and reporting.

You will study the human body as well as the plant and animal kingdoms at every level from microscopic to larger lifeforms.

Through the IGCSE Biology course you will look at the characteristics and variety of living organisms, and at their structures and functions. Reproduction and inheritance will also be studied.

IGCSE Biology also takes a wider perspective and looks at ecology and the environment, and use of biological resources.

Through biology study you will gain a knowledge of biological facts and principles at the same time as developing experimental skills.

Description

The IGCSE Biology coursework covers a range of topics relating to all types of living organisms and their interrelationships.

Nature and variety of living organisms

  • You will learn the characteristics shared by all living organisms and the features which define the different groups, such as plants, animals, fungi and others.

Structures and functions in living organisms

  • You will learn the basics of cell structure and biological molecules. Nutrition and respiration are described, as are gas exchange, transport and excretion. You will also learn about the issues involved in coordination and response.

Reproduction and inheritance

  • You will learn the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction and look at the different processes in plants and humans. You will also study the process of inheritance and the role of genes, chromosomes and DNA.

Ecology and the environment

  • You will look at the relationship of an organism and its environment and learn about feeding relationships and cycles within ecosystems. The course will also teach you about human influences on the environment.

Use of biological resources

  • You will learn about different types of food production by humans and about selective breeding, genetic modification and cloning.

Who is this course for?

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
