Overview

If you'd like to gain the skills needed to launch a career in Human Resources, the distance learning Human Resources course is ideal. The distance learning Human Resources course provides training in proven techniques which can be used to support and motivate people and build effective relationships.

A successful business is one that effectively and efficiently manages its resources, to provide a service or product that exceeds the expectations of its customers.  Its resources are materials, equipment, facilities and human, and by far the most important of these are its human resources, or employees.

The actual structure and day to day duties performed by the HR department will depend on the size and structure of individual organisations.  In large organisations there is usually a dedicated department of people performing the HR duties, whilst in other small organisations the duties might be performed by an individual working part time, who is combining these duties with a number of others.  In addition, the HR duties and responsibilities themselves will vary between organisations, and for instance in some, may include the payroll function, whilst in others this function is the responsibility of the Accounts department.

In this Human Resources Diploma we will be looking at the range of work most usually performed by the Human Resources department, and in particular the knowledge and skills that you will require as Human Resource Personnel, working under whatever circumstances, to fulfil this demanding yet rewarding role.

Description

How is the course structured?
The Human Resources Diploma consists of six modules, each of which relate to a particular aspect that is important and relevant to the work of the HR Personnel.  The modules are as follows:

Module One: Recruitment, Selection and Induction of Staff

This module focuses on managing the acquisition of staff which is a key role of any Human Resources department in supporting a business.

Staff recruitment is a time consuming and expensive process that should not be embarked upon lightly. Although it is usually the role of the manager to analyse and justify the need for additional human resources, it is important that the HR department is aware of the process required and what it involves, so that they can ensure that it has been carried out effectively. This module will help you to understand the recruitment process.

Module Two: Producing and Maintaining Personnel Records

All organisations and businesses need information or data to enable them to function effectively. Information about the organisation’s human resources or personnel is part of this essential business information.

There is a range of data that an organisation should keep about its personnel.  Some data must be kept in order to satisfy the organisations legal obligations and some in order to effectively manage and develop these resources, and to meet the current and future requirements of the business.  In his module we will be examining what personnel information is required, how it is used and how it is managed effectively.

Module Three: Staff Management and Relations

Good employer/employee relationships are essential to the success of any business. Employer/employee relationships can involve many parties with many rights and expectations, the key to managing these effectively is through the use of employment policies.

Having appropriate employment policies, ensuring that they are communicated to all concerned and consistently applied, will help Human Resources function to understand and better manage employer/employee relationships and reduce the incidence of grievances and disciplinary action. In this module, we will be looking at the main rights and expectations of workers and employers, and the policies and contents required by law and suggested by good practice, to manage these.

Module Four: Staff Support and Development

Staff support, training and development are crucial in facilitating a staff member’s integration into the organisation.  Ensuring that a new employee feels valued, able to contribute, and continues to be motivated is an ongoing process, in which the Human Resources Department has a key role to play, primarily in the area of development and training.

The module first looks at staff turnover, why it occurs, the problems it causes and the issues that need to be addressed in order to minimise it. The module then goes on to looking at the issues involved in providing effective and appropriate staff support, training and development.

Module Five: Disciplinaries, Grievances and Disputes

In any relationship, from time to time, misunderstanding and problems can and need to be dealt with and resolved in a fair and effective manner. The relationship between an organisation and its employees is no different.

Problems that can arise within the workplace are commonly referred to as disciplinary and grievance issues and disputes can occur when disciplinary or grievance issues are not dealt with effectively at an early stage. The Human Resources department of any business play a crucial role in the disciplinary and grievance procedure and this module explores the type of problems that can occur and how these are dealt with.

Module Six: Staff Terminations

In this module, we will be looking at the role played by Human Resources in managing the employee leaving process.

There are a variety of reasons why an employee may cease working for an employer, some voluntarily and others not.  Whatever the reason, it is important that the employment terminations are managed in an effective and professional manner. A poorly managed termination has many possible adverse consequences for an employer. In this module we will consider the main types of employee termination, the reasons for these and the processes involved in their effective management.

At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
