Description

Module 1 - Promoting quality care

This is the first of the 3 mandatory Modules for the AS part of the award and is 100% examined from the course material and independent research conducted by the student (internet and other resources).

This Module will explore:

  • What is quality care
  • Attitudes and prejudices that affect quality care
  • The rights and responsibilities of service users and providers
  • How services are accessed
  • Care values
  • Promotion of quality care

Module 2 - Communication in care settings

This second Module in the AS part of the award is formally assessed through portfolio work (coursework). 60% of the portfolio work will be based on course material and independent research/study by the student (internet based). The remaining 40% of the portfolio work will be achieved through communication with a single individual or small group of people who use Health and Social Care services. The assessment will also be based on the student’s performance during the communication and compilation of this portfolio.

The Module will explore:

  • Definition of communication
  • Types of communication
  • How communication is supported
  • Barriers to effective communication
  • Theories related to communication
  • Communication skills
  • Communicating/interaction with service users and/or practitioners

Module 3 - Promoting good health

This final Module for the AS part of the award is also formally assessed through portfolio work (coursework). 100% of this Module portfolio work will be based on research from the course material and independent research carried out by the student (internet based).

The Module will explore:

  • Definitions of health and wellbeing
  • Principles of health promotion
  • The principles of positive health and wellbeing
  • Preventative measures
  • Job roles
  • How to plan and carry out a health promotion campaign


Module 4 - Care practice and provision

The first A2 Module is assessed 100% by portfolio work which will be based on research from the course material and independent research conducted by the student (mainly internet based).

This Module will explore:

  • The planning and provision of services
  • The effects of national policy and legislation on provision of services and care practice
  • Definition of quality assurance
  • How quality assurance is promoted by services
  • Conducting a quality assurance survey
  • How services and practitioners meet the individual needs of service users
  • The ways in which service practitioners work within partnerships

Module 5 - Understanding human behaviour and development

This second A2 Module is assessed by 100% examination and this is based on the course material and some additional student research (internet based)

This Module will explore:

  • Human development processes
  • The factors that affect human development
  • Theories of development
  • How theoretical principles can be applied to aid the understanding of human behaviour and development

Module 6 - Anatomy and physiology in practice

This final A2 Module is assessed by 100% examination and this is based on the course material and some additional student research (internet based).

This Module will explore:

  • Why anatomy and physiology is important to Health and Social care practice
  • The respiratory system
  • The cardiovascular system
  • The digestive system
  • The reproductive system
  • The renal system
  • The musculoskeletal system
  • The neural system
  • Lifestyle choices and their effects on health and wellbeing

Who is this course for?

This course prepares students to enter a variety of HND or degree level courses in Health and Social Care and related subjects. It also provides a progression route for further training whilst in employment.

The aims of these specifications are to encourage students to:

  • Develop and sustain an interest in health, early-years care and education, social care and issues affecting the care sector. 
  • Acquire knowledge and understanding of health, early-years care and education and issues affecting the health and social sector. 
  • Develop skills that will enable them to make an effective contribution to the care sector including skills of research, evaluation and problem-solving in a work related context: 
  • Apply knowledge, understanding and skills. 
  • Prepare for further study and training.

Requirements

The good news is that no prior learning knowledge or experience is essential to take this course, however a minimum prior learning to GCSE standard and basic English reading and Writing skills would prove benificial to students in order to manage their studies and the assumed knowledge within the course content.
