A key skill required for most university degrees is the ability to deliver a presentation to a group, which is no easy feat. Presentations can come in all shapes and sizes. At the heart of many university courses is the requirement to compose and deliver a talk on an academic subject to your tutor, and often to a wider audience including your peers. This course focuses on these two aspects – the composition and delivery of an oral presentation – and aims to equip students with the skills and techniques they need to compose and deliver a presentation that is both interesting and informative.
Tutorial 1 covers the composition element in detail, whilst tutorial 2 looks at the delivery element, which is often the most daunting area for students unused to speaking in public, and even for experienced public speakers. The delivery is also the most tricky aspect for non-native English speakers, and tutorial 2 is particularly aimed at these, though native English speakers will also find it useful for honing their delivery skills.
Preparing Your Talk
In this tutorial we go through the process of composing your talk. We begin by looking at how to narrow down a talk title to a subject that you can talk about with passion, before moving on to focus on structure, tone, and persuasive language.
The second tutorial focuses on the delivery of an oral presentation, analysing a wide range of techniques such as use of intonation, stress, pitch, speed changes, and pausing. For each technique, our expert readers provide good and bad examples to get you practicing your own speaking skills.
