Learning Objectives and Outcomes of This Course

Towards the end of this Functional Skills Level 3 English Course, you will be able to:

  • Exhibit adequate command of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English
  • Utilise your English communication abilities in everyday situations

Official Exam/Assessment:

You will be assessed via paper based exam that you can take at our exam centre. When you will be ready for the official exam there is an additional registration fee of £150 (Excl. VAT) for Pearson Edexcel awarding body to book the official exam.

Compatible Assessment Process

To gauge your comprehension of English skills, this Functional Skills Level 3 English Course will evaluate you via writing and reading tasks, which are internally reviewed by the assessor and monitored and marked by the exam board. Once you complete the test, your results will be sent to Pearson Edexcel's internal verifier. If you successfully complete all three components, the awarding body will provide you with the qualification certificate.

The writing and reading assessments, which are available as a paper-based option, must be taken in our authorised office in London or Swindon on the scheduled day. You may use the "Zoom" app to appear for the speaking, listening, and communication evaluations.

However, you must register for the exam at least three weeks before the exam date.

Exam Format

Students must pass the speaking, listening, communicating, reading, and writing tests to receive the Pearson Edexcel and NCFE Functional Skills Qualification in English at Entry Level 3 certificate. The exam format is provided below:

Speaking, Listening, and Communicating

  • Duration: 20 minutes
  • Marks awarded: n/a

Reading

  • Duration: 45 minutes.
  • Marks awarded:24 marks
  • You can use a dictionary

Writing

  • Duration: 50 minutes
  • Marks awarded: 36 marks
  • You cannot use a dictionary

Course Curriculum

  • Identify and extract relevant information and detail in straightforward explanations
  • Make requests and ask concise questions using appropriate language in different contexts
  • Communicate information and opinions clearly on a range of topics
  • Respond appropriately to questions on a range of straightforward topics
  • Follow and understand the main points of discussions
  • Make relevant contributions to group discussions about straightforward topics
  • Listen to and respond appropriately to other points of view, respecting conventions of turn-taking
  • Read correctly words designated for Entry Level 3 (see Annexe D)
  • Identify, understand and extract the main points and ideas in and from texts
  • Identify different purposes of straightforward texts
  • Use effective strategies to find the meaning of words (e.g. a dictionary, working out meaning from context; using knowledge of different word types)
  • Understand organisational features and use them to locate relevant information (e.g. contents, index, menus, tabs and links)
  • Use a range of punctuation correctly (e.g. full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, commas)
  • Form irregular plurals
  • Use mostly correct grammar (e.g. subject–verb agreement, consistent use of tense, definite and indefinite articles)
  • Use the first, second and third place letters to sequence words in alphabetical order
  • Spell correctly words designated for Entry Level 3 (see Annexe D)
  • Communicate information, ideas and opinions clearly and in a logical sequence (e.g. chronologically, by task)
  • Write text of an appropriate level of detail and of appropriate length (including where this is specified)
  • Use appropriate format and structure when writing straightforward texts, including the appropriate use of headings and bullet points
  • Write in compound sentences and paragraphs where appropriate
  • Use language appropriate for purpose and audience
