The Foundation Degree offers professionals working in the modern security industry the opportunity to further their understanding of the principles and practices involved in the assessment and management of risk in a global society. As one of the few dedicated Criminology Departments in the UK, we are able to offer you genuine expertise in a supportive learning environment.

This distance learning programme opens the door to higher education to individuals in full or part-time employment, enabling them to gain an academic qualification alongside their professional commitments. If you choose to study Security and Risk Management at the University of Leicester you will be joining an internationally-renowned and thriving department.

Skills Gained

Personal Development Planning (PDP) is fully integrated throughout the programme which addresses and encourages the development of a range of transferable skills, such as critical thinking, reflective practice (through course journals and skills audits), problem solving and decision making in the workplace. The programme actively encourages employer engagement by applying principles to practice in your work environment.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The course consists of twelve core modules, all of which must be successfully completed to attain the Foundation Degree. Each module is assessed by one or more written assignments, which make up 3,000 words in total. You can choose a study schedule to fit your own needs and pace, undertaking the programme over a period of between three and four years.

  • If you follow the three year timetable you will have 12 weeks to complete each module.
  • If you follow the four year timetable you will have 16 weeks to complete each module.

This innovative distance learning programme is provided using the latest online delivery and support tools, with study materials and student assessments delivered via the Internet (applicants must have regular access to the web). All the information that you need for your studies is therefore just a click away. Students can also access first-rate online library, research and support services, established by the University of Leicester for its distance learning students.

You also have the opportunity to attend two study schools during the course of the degree. Combining seminars, lectures, workshops and tutorials, these schools provide the opportunity to meet tutors and fellow students, to discuss the degree programme and share experiences, and to receive additional information, support and advice.

Graduate Opportunities

You can progress from the Foundation Degree to the BA Security and Risk Management programme offered by the Department of Criminology and then to related MSc programmes offered by the University of Leicester or elsewhere. The degree gives you all the key attributes and skills that you will need and enhances the career and promotion prospects of existing practitioners within a rapidly expanding and diversifying employment sector.

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered.
