Course details
This qualification has two stages, each comprising 120 credits. Stage 1 provides the underpinning knowledge and skills needed for more advanced study at Stage 2.
You’ll begin by asking the question ‘What is a business?’ and exploring the business functions of human resource management, marketing, accounting and finance. Then you’ll be introduced to the skills of work-based learning, providing a stimulating link between study and your day-to-day working life. Finally, you’ll explore the fundamentals of retail management and marketing, completing this stage with a free choice option.
Compulsory modules (90 credits)
- An introduction to business studies (B120)
This module introduces internal and external elements of a business, explains the context in which a business operates, and explores common aims and characteristics.
- An introduction to retail management and marketing (B122)
Develop your knowledge of retail management and marketing by exploring the principle theories and concepts of retailing and examining the issues and challenges faced by retailers.
- Working and learning: developing effective performance at work (BU130)
An introduction to the skills of work-based learning – WBL – which provides a stimulating link between academic study and your day-to-day working life.

Optional module (30 credits)
You'll complete this stage with 30 credits from any OU level 1 module.
Stage 2 develops your understanding of wider organisational contexts and your skills in analysing and applying concepts. You’ll explore key business functions in context, examining organisational practices, processes and thinking, with a strong emphasis on practice-based learning. Finally, you’ll investigate issues of leadership, change and influence in retailing – exploring how to initiate and carry through improvements and projects in your current work setting.
A nationally recognised qualification in its own right, the foundation degree is also equivalent to the first two thirds of an honours degree.
