As times have developed our view of children and their needs has changed dramatically. From abolishing child labour to understanding the way children think.

Unit 2: Cognitive development

You should then be able to understand the different kinds of attachment children develop and learn as they grow.

Unit 3: Relationships and attachment

This unit covers language and the relevance it holds to development and communication. First to understand how language affects a child we must first understand language itself. By understanding language, we can understand its relevance to child psychology.

Child perceive the world in a different way to adults so the way they communicate is different. We will also look at what the theorist Piaget thought about a child’s language development.

Unit 4: Cognition and memory

In this unit we are going to learn about the importance of emotional, moral and social development in a child. There are many different theories put forward ion this kind of development as it is very difficult to measure. In this unit we will look at a few of the most prominent theorists and their theories.

Unit 5: Emotional changes

In this unit we will cover the role of memory in a child’s mind. By understanding memory, we can begin to understand how a child’s mind works. This includes other processes. Once we get a deeper understanding of a child’s memory process and the way the brain works we can begin to discuss how brain function in childhood relates to psychology.

Unit 6: Development into adolescence

In this final unit we are going to study the progression from childhood to adulthood. This can be a difficult time for children as it is when they go through some of their biggest changes both emotionally and physically.

Entering adulthood is a complex change as it is during this time, children go through the transition stage of adolescence. There are a variety of theories on adolescence that this unit will look into. A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
