Overview
Where a building is known or presumed to contain asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) an asbestos survey must be completed in order to establish the following:
- whether ACMs are present and if so record what specifically they are, where and how much there is
- a record of how accessible it is, its condition, and any surface treatment
- a record of the asbestos type
There are two types of survey for asbestos containing materials. The first is a management survey, the purpose of which is to enable the management of the material during the normal use of the building. The second is a refurbishment or demolition survey which is required where the building or part of it are being upgraded, refurbished or demolished.
This proficiency BOHS module provides background and practical knowledge in the surveying of buildings for asbestos and any necessary bulk sampling that may be required. It also provides general guidance on the management procedures necessary to minimise exposure to any identified asbesto.
