Description
AS Level
At AS, this specification stimulates the enthusiasm of students from the start. It emphasises the way in which biologists work and the contributions of biology to society in a way that underpins the specification but is not intrusive:
Unit 1: BIOL1 Biology and Disease
Examination paper: 1 hour 15 minutes
Unit 2: BIOL2 The variety of living organisms
Examination paper: 1 hour 45 minutes
Unit 3: Practical Assessment: Investigative and Practical Skills in AS Biology
A2 Level
At A2, this specification continues the approach taken at AS. The specification is clearly presented with a summary and content for each unit. There are additional sections summarising biological principles and establishing contexts for how science works:
Unit 4: BIOL4 Populations and environment
Examination paper: 1 hour 30 minutes
Unit 5: BIOL5 Control in cells and in organisms
Examination paper: 2 hour 15 minutes
Unit 6: Practical Assessment: Investigative and Practical Skills in A2 Biology
How Science Works
An understanding of How Science Works is a requirement. How Science Works is an underpinning set of concepts and is the means whereby students come to understand how scientists investigate scientific phenomena in their attempts to explain the world about us. Moreover, How Science Works recognises the contribution scientists have made to their own disciplines and to the wider world.
