Overview

A distance learning course is the ideal way to gain aqualification in Biochemistry. Whether you're looking to go on to further education, improve your job prospects or expand your knowledge, distance learning Biochemistry Course is a flexible and convenient course, which allows you to comprehensively prepare for an exam or career through home study. What's more, because the distance learning Level 3 Biochemistry course is a fully comprehensive course, no prior knowledge is required.

In this course, you will be introduced to biochemistry, which is the study of the chemical processes which take place in living cells. People are sometimes deterred from studying this subject by the thought of the chemistry and physics on which it is based. This course aims to show that it is quite possible to achieve an understanding of some of the fundamental concepts in biochemistry without building on a basis of pure science.

The approach will be practice related, with an emphasis on selected areas of the subject which can help to improve understanding of the provision of care to patients and clients. No prior knowledge of the subject is assumed.

Description

How is the course structured?

The Level 3 in Biochemistryis divided into seven comprehensive modules.

Module 1: The Cell as a Small Business

  • Discuss how different types of cells are adapted for their particular function
  • Analyse how you would invent something unique and turn it into a commercial proposition

Module 2: Cellular Machine Tools

  • Evaluate the way in which a cell makes the necessary machinery to perform its function
  • Examine the process under which protein synthesis take place
  • Describe how the nucleus controls protein synthesis
  • Introduce how health care can support this function

Module 3: The Cellular Machinery

  • Examine what proteins are and how enzymes work showing conditions they require in order to work properly and how they can go wrong
  • Discuss the function of enzymes
  • Evaluate the conditions important to enzymes
  • Summarise how environmental and genetic factors affect enzymes

Module 4: Importing Raw Materials

  • Describe raw material, their origin and how they are brought to the cell
  • Introduce how food is broken down into a small number of basic materials
  • Examine how these materials are used to make the cell’s products

Module 5: The Power Supply

  • Discuss the type of work carried out in cells and how the cell deals with by-products arising from its power supply
  • Identify where cellular activity receives its energy from
  • Summarise what mitochondria are and what their purpose is

Module 6: Packaging & Transport

  • Explain how cells package and label their products and sort them for despatch to different destinations
  • Analyse the process used by materials to get in and out of cells
  • Examine the packaging procedure of proteins before transportation
  • Discuss how manufactured products leave the cells

Module 7: Quality Control

  • Introduce the functions of control and integration as they apply to a small business
  • Explain how internal and external control of cell metabolism is handled
  • Summarise the purpose of insulin
  • Analyse the idea of integration as applied to metabolic pathways in the cell

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
