This online home study course in A-Level Economics is closely based on AQA's A-level Economics specification and will provide all the information you need to prepare for the AQA Economics A-Level. This distance learning course includes the study of both micro and macro economics and covers such important topics as: Markets and Market Failure; The National Economy;

This specification is designed to:

  • develop an interest and enthusiasm for economics and its contribution to the wider economic and social environment
  • develop an understanding of a range of concepts and acquire an ability to use these concepts in a variety of different contexts
  • develop an enquiring, critical and thoughtful 'economist's mind'
  • practise skills, qualities and attitudes which will equip them for the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities of adult and working life
  • develop an understanding of current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life
  • apply economic concepts and theories in a range of contexts and appreciate their value and limitations in explaining real world phenomena
  • analyse, explain and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the market economy and the role of government within it

AS Level

At AS, this specification will enable candidates to develop an understanding of, and an insight into, micro and macroeconomics:

Unit 1: ECON1  Markets and Market Failure
Examination: 1 hour 15 minutes

Unit 2: ECON2  The National Economy
Examination: 1 hour 15 minutes

A2 Level

At A2, candidates develop the micro and macroeconomics already learnt at AS, considering economic concepts and theories in greater depth and recognising the values and limitations of economic models.

Both A2 modules explore two contemporary and relevant contexts: the global context, which includes the impact of globalisation on UK economic performance; and the European Union context, embracing the effect of EU membership and economic policy on the UK economy:

Unit 3: ECON3 Business Economics and the Distribution of Income

Qualification Information

AS +A2 = A level in Economics. Both AS and A2 level courses and examinations must be successfully completed to gain a full A level

Method of Assessment

Your course of study is broken down into units and sections, each of which contains lessons, activities and test papers.

Courses are delivered on our Moodle based Digital Learning Environment 'CloudPort' allowing you to study from anywhere on any smart device as long as you have access to the Internet.

The course concludes by preparing you for examination using past papers in your chosen subject.

Course Length Information

Our A Levels come with tutor support for up to 24 months and for this course support expires in June 2016 due to syllabus changes brought in by the Government.

Tutor Support

Your have access to both a student service advisor and academic course tutor. Your student service advisor will offer assistance with administrative and technical issues.

Your academic tutor will support you with any course related questions you might have. In addition you have access to an interactive forum where you can engage with your fellow course students.

Our core pedagogy highlights the significance of peer support in the learning process and as such all students are encouraged to support their fellow students using support forums

Note: The new A Level Economics syllabus will be available after April 2015 - you can choose to take this, however, you will not be able to complete the exams until June 2017.

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered.
