PURPOSE OF JOB

Operation, servicing, maintenance and repair of the Ground Wheel Lathe.

Carry out maintenance of diesel multiple units to recognised standards and laid down procedures whilst playing an active role to ensure that the reliability and availability targets are consistently met and improved. Comply with instructions, rules and regulations in force.

LIST OF DUTIES
  1. Work to the instruction of the Senior Team Leader Production Support, A+, Senior Team leader, Depot Team Leader or Designated Person as directed and within competence
  2. Ensure your personal safety and the safety of others at all times, report any close calls, safety opportunities and accidents through the correct process
  3. Sign off all completed tasks and endorse when applicable
  4. Attend Technical, Safety, Quality and general briefings and ensure actions are taken on items raised. Ensure you keep up to date with all briefs
  5. Acting on direction from the Senior Team Leader Production Support, A+, Senior Team Leader, Depot Team Leader, own initiative, or from reports in the vehicle defect book, investigate and rectify reports of deficiencies in unit performance or presentation, logging any corrective action taken and/or deferred work
  6. Undertake servicing, fuelling and tanking of traction and rolling stock, replenishment of oils, greases, screen wash sand etc. including the discharging of CET tanks where fitted
  7. Undertake Safety Critical Work Regulations assessments under the guidance of the Team Leader, taking remedial action where necessary
  8. Liaise with the Team Leader to determine the workload priorities, ensure that the work is progressed
  9. Advise Team Leader of all work arising and any difficulties encountered
  10. Obtain, care for and return all instruments, tools and equipment to correct storage locations
  11. Book out through the correct process material and consumables from the stores such as train parts, oil and fuel
  12. Undertake any lower graded work, where competent, to facilitate completion of depot workloads
  13. Undertake welding, brazing and burning duties where competent
  14. Keep place of work clean and tidy at all times
  15. Ensure adherence to working instructions and quality procedures, in line with ISO requirements
  16. Undertake mentoring duties to assist in the training of newly appointed Team Member Skilled (A grades)
  17. Accept future technological advancements specific to your duties and the responsibilities of their roles after due consultation and consideration within the agreed procedures, recognising any productivity improvement and with relevant training being provided
  1. Maintain competence in Traction and Rolling Stock maintenance, notify the Senior Team Leader Production Support immediately of any deficiency in maintenance competence
  2. Carry out the Depot Protection Coordinator role as and when required
KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING

Maintenance: successful completion of level 3 NVQ Engineering competence necessary to undertake tasks and or recognised Engineering apprenticeship

Good technical knowledge covering mechanical, electrical, plumbing & vehicle building skills, including schematics (Electrical, Air & Hydraulic)

An extensive knowledge and experience of railway operation and maintenance practices is desirable

Previous experience of DMU maintenance practice is desirable

A good understanding of COSHH safety related instructions is essential

Must have an ability to communicate clearly and confidently with all levels of personnel both written and oral

Demonstrate ability to work on own initiative

Good interpersonal skills

  • Maintaining safety standards and safe methods of working.
  • Ensuring full compliance with systems for investigation and reporting of accidents to employees and other reportable incidents ensuring effective corrective action is taken to prevent recurrence
  • Ensuring the safety of employees, contractors and visitors who are working in the department
  • Check that immediate reports receive and understand relevant safety related documentation

  • Knowledge of applicable Safety Management System Procedures (see SMSP vs. Job matrix on the safety document library)
  • First Aid at Work (if identified as a first aider requirement through the assessment of need process)

  • Only when visiting northern maintenance depots. (bump cap, safety eyewear, hearing protection, safety shoes, overalls, HV vest)
